A man on a snowmobile attacked two dog teams competing in the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race early Saturday.

The attack killed one dog and injured at least three others, the Associated Press reports, with two mushers and their teams attacked outside the village of Nulato, just past the halfway point of the race.

Mushers Ally Zirkle, a three-time race runner-up, and Jeff King, a four-time champion, were attacked by the unidentified man as the snowmobile made multiple passes at Zirkle’s sled and dog team. The same snowmobile reappeared further on the route. One of Zirkle’s dogs was bruised but not seriously injured.

King was trailing Zirkle and was hit by the snowmobile from behind, with at least three dogs hit and one, a three-year-old male, killed.

King and Zirkle were reportedly uninjured.

Hardly a coverup, most likely the Troopers had yet to arrive at that point and interview and arrest the asswipe.
