I love international women; they're yummy.
 
I'll be damned, there really is such a thing. There's even an International Men's Day. What a momentous revelation.

Our old Ford Exploder was stopped at a roadblock near Ocosingo, Chiapas (outside Maya Palenque) by Zapatista rebels taking 'donations' in honor of International Women's Day. A crowd of several hundred machete-carrying peasants stood near the roadblock; trucks and buses stretched both ways on the mountain highway, drivers and passengers angry and nervous. The Zap spokeswoman said we could either give them money or they could kill us. We threw them 80 pesos (seven bucks); they let us pass. We stopped a few mile on to shiver and shake at our getaway. We waited maybe 20 minutes. No other traffic came from the roadblock. Was there a fight?

Anyway, International Women's Day always reminds me of almost being murdered by Mayan revolutionaries. Have a nice day, folks. Keep your heads.

PS: We safely reached San Cristóbal and found a room for a month. We talked of the event at a gathering of locals and expats. We had various reactions:

* The Zaps are only trying to protect much-abused Maya locals.
* The Zaps are filthy animals and should be exterminated.
* The real Zaps ain't bad but fake Zap imposters will kill you.
* They just want to steal land back from the previous thieves.
* There aren't any real Zaps, only gangs justifying criminality.
* International Women's Day is their favorite for collecting 'tolls'.

Men who love women also celebrate today.
It's not a day to celebrate though, just a day to remember.
 
I love women. They're soft and pretty and their skin makes such nice...maybe I've said too much.
