who watches Vinyl?

I put Vinyl siding on two houses. I was so impressed I sat in a lawn chair and stared at it for hours!

I've seen the pilot. I was very eagerly anticipating it, the subject matter is really up my alley but ended the ep thinking it was adequate. I think it could go great places though, that pallet is so rich with possibilities.
They didn't license the music and that really sticks out like a sore thumb. The cast is great, Dice's performance in hindsight was pretty good but he does stray into his Dice persona here and there which pulls me out of the moment.

I'm really looking forward to watching Cameron Crowe's new series Roadies. I originally thought it might be set back in the day and have the same vibe as Almost Famous, a wonderful love letter to music and the life. It appears to be about a contemporary rock group, but the spot I saw was really heartwarming.

I saw the first two episodes on an HBO preview weekend. Its alright, but I think, a little sensationalized.

They use the "live performance" scenes as filler. It's a cheap way to justify being lazy. It's bored me to tears for two episodes and tonight will be it's last chance.

The only funny part is when they caved in Andrew Dice Clay's skull.

i haven't seen it, but i do know that the big reason that a lot of show don't license the music is because that shit is fucking expensive. i remember listening to the commentary track on community and hearing dan harmon talk about basically blowing their entire music budget for the second season on the halloween episode because abba don't come cheap.

Terence Winter did Boardwalk Empire before Vinyl, and so far it's looking like the new show will have the same key problem as the previous show: I don't actually care very much about the lead character.

Besides, one of the key historical facts about the New York music scene in the 1970s is that the corporate types were very, very slow to pick up on the really interesting stuff that was in its embryonic form. The last episode had a dig on the popularity of Chicago, but everyone in the record industry in 1973 was trying to find their version of Chicago. No one in the boardrooms gave a shit about the New York Dolls.

There is the raw material for an awesome show here, but so far we're getting a lot of record industry inside baseball and a coked-up lunatic who doesn't seem to appreciate that he's married to Olivia Wilde. I have trouble relating.

oh, olivia wild is in it? that's not good.

sadly.

and i don't why that's true, but it is. she's just in a lot of mediocre crap for some reason.

Yeah I know what you mean, it's pricey and then there's the possibility that Zep tells them to fuck right off even if they would/could pay. Then trying to bring the series to DVD, BluRay, Netflix.....they have to re-up the licensing for each of those formats. It's really gross actually. But, at the same time....it's HBO, I've never known them cheap out on anything, so it was surprising. At any rate I have hopes the show will get more enjoyable.

HBO cancelled Deadwood because of the cost.

I'm not a big tv or movie person. Blame my folks. Our house was music, food, books and ball games. I was taken to more concerts and ball games than movies. I hardly remember the tv being on in our house.

Having said all of that, I had high hopes because of both the music I was raised on and the ground breaking music I discovered later. I think I will keep watching for the sheer entertainment of snippet of dings they play and the goofy running commentary my fella and I exchange while watching it. It can now only go up from my zero expectations.

Don't deny me my mild delusions, the both of you just butt out and allow me to maintain blissful ignorance, I'm sayin'. Has the production licensed quite a lot of music? I can't remember specifically but I thought it was just the Led Zep that was butchered in royalty free fashion. It stuck out since it was so central to the ep. I know the production is promoting a soundtrack release that has heavy hitters on it.
The new spots for the first couple of episodes have me really wanting to dive in. Hopefully the weight of a period piece coupled with the music doesn't crush this like it did those other shows.

I'm sure Game of Thrones costs a fortune, too but they can justify it. Deadwood wasn't able to even with all the acclaim. However they have ordered a movie script for it so it might come back once.
