I did a project like that in middle school! See how many people I could get to sign a petition to ban dihydrogen monoxide, to make some point about advertising and not getting the whole picture. The amount of signatures I got was staggering.

I can believe it. Just look at the stuff people forward to family and friends, via email or Facebook, for nonsense causes, made up events, or false tragedies.

Some of those folks did not like being sent links to SNOPES or credible news sources. Perhaps it ruined the temporary good feels they were experiencing.
