Consider this a sister thread to "Crafty Litsters" for those who like to get their hands dirty... in compost and seed catalogs.

I had an onion in the produce basket that sprouted so I let it go just to see what it would do. A couple of the "scapes" started to yellow so I figured it was running out of moisture or nutrients so I potted it in a milk jug.

:p

I am so sorry, I didn't realize you had one or I certainly wouldn't have duplicated.

I know what you mean about feeling behind. We are under six inches of ice and snow and I am still itching to start some seeds. Every year I have to get out my maps and my calendar and count backwards and then mark the calendar when I can start seeds. It is truly a lesson in patience.

This morning we were out and about for appointment and errands, and I noticed that the peach trees at one "farmette" home nearby are blooming. This week is all 80s (F) and I am NOT ready! Obviously the peaches know better than me. I'm hoping to visit a favorite orchard later this week for some pix.

Sadly nature is often wrong. In climates like ours its not unusual for fruit to be lost because blossoming occurs before last frosts and before the pollinators are about strongly :(

Indeed! Then the fans get turned on and the smudge pots fired up trying to keep some semblance of a harvest to claim.

My girls are flying like crazy :) right now they have mainly the tiny flowers that bloom in the grass. Tiny 4 petals in pinks and white. The winged elm are ready to give them pollen.

You both have nice threads Thank you

You bee keep?

:rose:Yes Or more like I give a few hives as safe a home as I can manage. :rose:

What did it say about weather? We have frost and had a few tint flakes of snow...unsatisfying, not enough to make things pretty or stay.

:rose:We are having frosty mornings but many warmer late mornings and afternoons. I found last years last wild flowers in Dec, and this years first flowers in Jan. Do worry about the fruit trees blooming to early then a March freeze. I love getting up and seeing the frost jewels glittering on the lawn and fields,:rose:

Ooh I love gardening. Although I don't have any opportunities to do so anymore. I'm off at college, in the dorms. I loved growing heirlooms. All sorts of funky colored vegetables. Companion planting, etc. Here in the south we've had a rather mild winter. A few good frosts but the grass is still green.

Unfortunately no. But as a biology major, I get to spend a good amount of time outside. So even if I'm not planting and growing stuff, I get to see things growing.

So jealous! Seed start day is still twelve weeks away. I can start my peppers in just ten. Lol. That's good though, I am going to make self-watering planters out of cut up two liter bottles and still haven't started that project yet.

The onion put on another stem of scapes (not sure what the actual term is), but seems to be a little droopy. Hopefully it's just a little "transplant shock".

I've got another onion in the basket headed down the same path. Yay.

Don't feel obliged to, but this would also be welcome in my gardening thread .... I love your great use of milk bottles. I grow appropriate seeds in lavatory roll insides.....so they can be replanted without disturbance. And to save buying the cardboard seed cells. :D. I wish we had more window sill space.

Somehow I am just now seeing this thread...
I love the cardboard recycle plan, have never thought about it or heard of it. Thanks! :)

Elle, do you close the bottoms of your toilet rolls or just leave them open?

I've thought of using them as start cells but my nursery trays are all grid bottomed so I would need to close up the toilet rolls.

I didn't even think of this...
I was going to flatten it a bit and use it sideways, three seedlings to a roll. I suppose it depends on how quickly it will disintegrate and if you are talking about a carrot vs thyme or something shallow rooted.
