The Name of the Rose is what he was best known for.

Stunning writer. Foucault's Pendulum is The DaVinci Code for grown ups.

I never read In The Name of The Rose, but Foucault's Pendulum was a favourite. And I don't mean a favourite Eco, but a favourite novel, period. The layers in that book - it was thrilling. And hilarious.

I really liked Name of the Rose. I found it incredibly interesting in it's detail of life in a monestary at that time.
Foucault's Pendulum was really fun. As someone just said, DaVinci Code for grown ups.
Those are the only two of his I ever read.

Good riddance to another wordy whacker.

I occasionally reread his Conversations With A Trout.

I am not enlightened.

Try Baudolino. It's laugh out loud funny with Eco's usual erudite tricks.

And Chrome thinks Baudolino should be Mandolin for some insane reason.

A translator as well as a prolific author - I preferred his "Mouse or Rat? Translation as Negotiation".
