Elle, I found you!

What a great thread for you.

My food addition to this thread: king cake. It is that time of year and I am having a face off in my kitchen between cinnamon laced and cream cheese tweaked. The victor shall be eaten at the Super Bowl party. In lieu of a plastic baby, I am going the route of the bean.

I am going to have to google king cake......

Sorry! It is a big deal here and I forget that Catholicism has different customs abroad (you might be more familiar with galette des rois or gateau des rois). King cakes are an old tradition grounded in the festival of the Epiphany. King cake season starts Jan. 6 when the Christmas season comes to a close and cake season continues until Fat Tuesday, the day prior to Ash Wednesday, the beginning of lent. The cakes come in two varities. Either a yeasted cake, something like sweet bread, or more pastry like and filled with something creamy. Tradition calls for burying a plastic baby, or bean, in the cake, with one lucky recipient. The recipient of the bean or baby is responsible for bringing the cake to the following year's party, and is also said to be the bearer of good luck for the coming year.

I am familiar with gateau de rois, but I also googled king cake at it looks delicious. I like that king cake season is so long! Is it Shrove/ Fat Tuesday soon?. I am out of touch.:eek:

Well, I just cooked a tea towel while I was meaning to make eggs.. I am not proud of myself. It didn't even look appetising. :D. While I was putting the teatowel under a tap I burnt my piece of toast.

I checked twice that I have turned everything off. Maybe I should check again.....

Yes! Fat Tuesday is next week.
I am an expert at cooking tea towels unintentionally, but have yet to set the kitchen on fire. Yet. Knock on wood.
I am off to get my butt to work, have a fab day. xo

The King cake was new to me. Seems related to our variety of pre-lent pastry though:
Sorry for the humongous picture!

I have had a couple of minor kitchen fires. Nothing damaging.

Have a great day Sinny!
When I was in my early 20's, I moved in my parents basement for a year.
My habit was to go out with friends, come home late and throw a frozen pizza in the oven.
Then fall asleep.
My father, who was the Fire Chief, would wake up at 5am to a house filled with smoke and a black wafer in the oven.
And it was illegal to burn leaves in town, but my mother did it every year to piss off my dad.
His favourite saying was,
"For Christ's sakes people, I'm the God damned Fire Chief!"

made cheesy, ham and veggie pot pies for dinner; it is cold and rainy here, so comfort food was needed

Broiled sanma for dinner tonight. I cut up some enokitake for miso and set some aside to also be broiled. I'm keeping this simple because I seem to have tuckered myself out. Having pickled daikon with the rice.

After spending a week with a quasi vegetarian, I was ready for something substantial. Roasted a chicken and made a garlic mash. It was extremely satisfying :)

I also made this celery, apple and fennel salad. In place of apple cider vinegar, which I didn't have, I used white vinegar and Pom. I also subbed Herbs de Provence for tarragon. It was super delicious!

....any thing fall on the floor?
Even one morsel?....I am hungry

I want to cram that entire thing in my mouth, pronto.
Or at least give me five minutes alone with it.
Damn.

:D

Just be warned that you will have powdered sugar all over your face and cream up your nose.
Don't ask how I know that.

Spinach and kale crepes with cottage cheese filling and some sort of salad.
