Long time reader here, but I am starting my first story today. One question I have about Literotica is when you're submitting your story, how do you break it up into multiple pages? Or is this done automatically?
If you have any other suggestions about formatting please let me know.

It's done automatically.

Also, here is a suggestion:

Sometimes when you copy & paste a story onto the submission area (at least for me), you'll see extra spaces. For instance:

paragraph

paragraph

(two spaces)

paragraph

If you see extra line spaces, make sure you fix that yourself so that there's only one space between each paragraph, if that makes sense.

I'm not sure if that happens to anyone else. Maybe it's just me. But I copy & paste and sometimes there are extra lines. I think it's from the page breaks of whatever word processor I'm using. But I think there are extra as well.

The opposite is also true. You might see two paragraphs stuck together. You'll have to fix that yourself.

I write in Word, but I always save to a plain text file and edit it with Notepad before using the browse feature to upload the text file. I've never had any problems with formatting doing it that way.

Good luck with your story and welcome to the AH. It's a wild and crazy party here :D

I've always copied and pasted directly from Word. No problems in more than 800 stories.

Yep, that's how I do it too. Never had a problem with Lit.

Now Smashwords...somehow, sometimes, weird character get in there and their meatgrinder spits out that something went wrong. Also, just an aside Smashwords doesn't like .png files.

Hey welcome to the Authors' Hangout :)

When you copy and paste the text of your story into the box, you will get to preview it before you press 'submit', so you can spot most issues and go back to correct them.

Make sure you come back and post a link to your story when it's uploaded.

I am just going to hijack your thread, dahlink, and ask my own formatting question in here - so sorry.

I know people have said how to do this but I can't find where. What's the HTML tag for insetting text in a story? Also, is it possible to make single lines? I want to quote some poetry, so I don't want it to end up as Literotica paragraphs normally do with a line break in between all the lines.

Sometimes a line break works.

La la la<br>Lo lo lo<br>Lu lu lu

And sometimes it doesn't. LIT's processing warez are inconsistent there.

You can also nest blockquote tags...

<blockquote><blockquote>text</blockquote></blockquote>

The above would give you a ten character indent where a single blockquote gives you a five character indent.

Just don't over do it with nesting or you might wind up with a line single characters centered on the page.

Whuuut? You just made my day. I'm totally using that in my stories.
(Because what's porn without multi-line quotes from other sources, right? ;) )

Ah, but sometimes our illustrious publisher(Laurel) doesn't let them through. It's been hit or miss lately. :(

I should be OK with the quotes - they are all very old bits of poetry, long out of copyright. I don't think the families of Lords Byron and Tennyson bother, do they?

They were both naughty writers in their way - Byron in his private life as well as his writing! so they can hardly complain of being cited in some romantic smut, LOL.
