Does this town have to be set in carbon-copy America like most of the Lit offerings? It's an invisible setting that shows a lack of imagination. If we put it on a Swiss, Cumbrian or Malawian lakefront, we have a setting. Yes, I'm a grumpy Englishman!
The imagination was to be provided by the Institute of Human Sexuality of Futter University. As an academic VM, one of the originators, placed it in the intermountian west where it would provide scenery, and an attitude less conventional than Appalachia, the Texas plains or the cornfields of the flyover midwest.
The enclosed valley at about 5000 ft elevation, surrounding mountains, small river and hot springs provided a variety differing vocations for the small population.
I chose to include a retired soldier who was looking for a calm place but finds a paradise unsullied by the narrow mindedness found in the East, South, and Northeast, or the insanity that is Southern California. I included a black former Chicago policeman who also gets involved with the women's alumni organization.
While no one has as yet written a Native American oriented character, there are plenty around this area allowing the NA culture a place to blossom. I had a bunny about one but haven't fleshed it out.
I suppose you could include a visiting professor who tells retrospective tales of sexual attitudes and behaviors of far off lands when in his cups, to contrast foreign cultures. But make sure he gets fucked a few times.
HP had started on a Englishman fleeing to Horner Sprigs to hide from the "bad guys" who wish him ill. However Charlie hasn't gotten to HS so far. Perhaps now that HP is in remission he will finish his story. I offered to help him with the Americana.
I was looking forward to using HP's "Charlie and Hazel" in a second HS romance novel about a younger woman who fears she is a slut but is redeemed by love and a tall blond cowboy. Naoko liked the way it was going, but chided me for my complexity. It's been in my to do file for a while.
So I doubt your imagination would limited by the location. After reading your FAWC story, I think you could pull it off.
OK, you big ape, you've sold me! The university would be an interesting settng, and we can send them on field trips. I have a few plot bunnies that might work with that setting. Where do I turn for inspiration and information about the uniqueness of mountain land?
Well first check out the ref thread. It's a bit big but is mostly about the town map, which isn't really all that important actually. I put a description of the valley in HS Retirees #1. If you have Goggle Earth look at the terrain in the NW Colorado Eastern Washington. Check a few pictures of Leadville Colorado and other towns there are some in the ref thread.
Figure the valley is an Alpine grassland and the mountains are big Pine country. Some logged off and second growth. Kind of like Switzerland really w/o the really ancient buildings.
Dinner time. PM me if you need more.
So... is this happening? Jack, are you pulling the trigger?
I shall take this research poolside.
Can I have an endocrinology lab researching female viagra? I've two scientists who decide to trial the compounds on themselves! Also a museum where a young curator puts on an exhibition on the history of sex toys would be great.
Me? Madam, I don't know what you mean?
I do believe that I will add to the Retirees series now. I have been wickedly idle for that last few years. I have at least four more installments plotted, using the character cast I developed in 1-6. I am determined to finish it in 2016 but I need some other folks to add to Horny Springs if it is to acheive the goals in the original concept.
I have a separate HS Romance 50% done and the rest plotted, I think. I never really know until I finish typing.
The greater story needs more female(s) perspective. My romantic burlesques are male fantasy and VM is off moving house and is unlikely to add his more academic voice. Gorsa may dip in a toe, but who knows? If he does that should be a good one.
I don't know if HP is up for finishing his story? Are you HP?
Would you be interested in taking on a HS story or two?
I may. I should read some first. I have a deep interest in bookstores with back rooms. Is there room for such? But perhaps reading first.
I promise nothing fast. I have a long list of to do's, but I usually deliver, eventually.
Now you've got me to thinking with the Native American angle. Not to mention the plot bunny humping my leg.
Horner Springs is sheep country and Basque shepherds did form a bond with the scattered Native tribes early on. I was going to use that angle in a story. I suppose the tribes around there were Shoshone or maybe Blackfeet?
Crow or Paiute, maybe Blackfoot. Shoshone were more plains Indians farther east.
Maybe Nez Peirce? I know they were in the Paloose in Idaho. The bunny I had was kind of spotted. About a young man home from the wars who hooked up with his Basque uncle who herded sheep in the high meadows in summer. The Indian girl was helping her Aunt supply the wandering shepherds with grub and other scarce services. I didn't name her tribe.
So are you up for this Tex? Are you going to add to the rich cultural texture of the west and show Gorza how varied America can be?
I resolved to write more this year by letting my inner child out, to stop all this plotting and scheming which has stalled me for so long. Besides I've got so many wild hares I need to finish.
One of them is about a HS woman who gets a Turquoise and Silver necklace with a squash blossom dangle, "So evocative of spring's fecundity," and it changes her life.
VM put some horses in one of his stories about a Trio who was developing into a quad.
Ok, with the utmost amount of respect, and just for the sake of the beloved devil's advocate, i will provide some possible insight into why it didn't work last time. It's putting me to sleep just reading about it here. It's like everything people hate about historical stories combined with what they hate about chapter stories. And with required reading beforehand too. Might as well require that we eat Brussels Sprouts while we read too!
Apologies in advance, i know this won't be appreciated for its message. Hopefully, you'll appreciate for its honesty? Obviously, i speak just for myself, but the voices in my head all agree...![]()
