Out of curiosity, what do you consider a low score?

I would think something in the 2s. I have read pretty good stories that were 3 ranked.
:)

immediate response for me is 4.3 - although i have several [dozen?] well below!

86% of people liked it. Sounds high for a low.

Yeah, some of the best writing I've seen on this sight was in the 3's. Not necessarily in the best categories to have scores any higher. Some of it in non-erotic.

Yeah, LW is a snake pit all its own.

Unrealistic anywhere.

The LW is what it is. I tried to move to NON-EROTIC and the boss put me back in LW.

Its realistic. Pedestrian readers go for the highest scores.

In general I would say the twos or very low threes.

But it can depend on category, for instance if I see a 4.45 in non human I think low score because that category scores really high. LW on the other hand anything over 4 is pretty damn good there.

For me personally anything under 4.4 I consider low. I have three under that as of right now.

When I write Satire, I expect to be punished, so I have no expectations.

The rest of my submissions have all been 4.6 and above, so I'd have to agree that it is indeed a category thing. Some categories are scored very leniently.

Ah, I had a momentary laps when i posted the original post. I should have asked:

When picking a story to read what do you consider a score too low to consider?

I have one RED H. Cant recall the category, MATURE I think. Its a lame & tame car trip featuring a cougar and a boy she hired to rake her yard or whatever. LIT readers don't reward controversy.

Anything below 2.5, less than 50% of the readers don't like it. Anything higher than 2.5 is bonus time. 3's and 4's are excellent. :D 5's - impossible.

I go for specific topics like HOMEWRECKER and sample whats on the list. Almost all are scored above 3 anyway.

I wonder how reactions would change if the score was 0-100% instead or 1-5.

I never look at the score. I go into whatever category I am in the mood for and if the title and tag catch my eye I read it.

Like everyone else I have read stories I thought were great and was surprised to discover it had a low score then read ones I thought were subpar and they had great numbers.

What I go by is author. If I read something and I really did not like it I won't read anymore from them.

One note on score samuelx has horrible numbers many well under two. Not one h in 2k plus stories. I saw that and thought no one can be that bad....it is

But...I think its international. He has talent butl he writes to offend.

Generally below 3 for an established story. A new story I'd consider just about any score since there are some folks who just love to go into new stories and bomb away.

I tend to gravitate to the lower scored stories for my own reading pleasure. Usually a high scored story bores the shit outta me and when I'm reading here, it's for a specific purpose and boredom doesn't work well for that purpose.

I will admit I've clicked some low scored stories and three paragraphs in I was laughing so hard I had to back click. Laughter doesn't work well for my specific purpose either.

so 3 is the median?

I tend to hang out in the NH and SF categories the most, so from what I've seen I don't bother reading anything rated under a 4. Of course when I was brand new to the site I'd read anything that caught my attention regardless of score, but I started to notice the trend with the scoring. Anything less than a 4 most likely has extremely questionable spelling and grammar, which are death sentences to a story as far as I'm concerned. Obviously mistakes happen, but there's a fine line between "Spell check didn't catch this" and "I didn't even bother trying". If I'm specifically looking for a certain type of story I'll be brave and venture into the occasional upper 3s (Like 3.8~). However if I'm just cruising around I don't look twice at a story that's less than a 4.

Basically, 4 denotes I can expect good spelling, grammar and a little bit of characterization. Anything closer to a 5 hints that this writer is okay, good or great at what they do. Since my stuff is still being edited and hasn't been posted I don't have a goal score to aim for, but as long as I get 4*+ then I'll be satisfied with that. If I venture into other categories that scale might be adjusted according to what I'm working with (I've never been in LW and now I'm scared to go in there, hehe).

so 3 is the median?

Oops, I guess I forgot to answer the question. For me below a 4 is a low score and one I'll probably click on. Below a 3 I just have to look to see what they did to get such a low score. Some of the best stories I've read have scores in the 2.8 - 3.0 range

Below 4.5, I figure I goofed up badly. I write in a number of categories, but not nonHuman or LW, so I figure scores really do more or less reflect whether the writing was good.

I always wanted to get to 4.9 (and once got to 4.88), but as far as I can tell, anything above 4.8 starts to rank well in halls of fame and attracts constant jealousy votes, so I don't know if 4.9 is even possible here.

It's a little odd having 4.49 mean "eh, I didn't quite nail it" and 4.89 meaning "glorious perfection".

As far as I can see, for most voters, it's
1: hate vote, or the story sucks so badly the words didn't actually make sense.
2: I hate your fetish, smarter hate vote, or really bad writing.
3: eh. Poor. I didn't get off. I won't check out your other stuff. Yawn.
4: hm, this didn't suck. Nothing too special; but at least I didn't feel like I wasted my time.
5: ok, you got me, I'm in a puddle here, and the writing was solid and believable throughout.

So I figure 4.5 is about the right ranking for an H - the story stands out a little and is probably well written at least.
