I need a competent, educated, super awesome person to edit my next story, please.

Her Confessions: Part 2 is finished and in need of an editor. I learned my lesson on self editing with Part 1. PM me if your interested.

Try the Editors Forum.

All you'll get here is abuse, and dick jokes!:D

Thanks for the warning lol. I posted in there as well, it's just dead in that room tonight.

Thank you. I have had a few send me messages.

As you settle on one, you might agree up front how soon you should expect it back and that communications channels will be open. There has been a rash of problems on that in recent months based on complaints made on the forum. Do be prepared for someone not trained as an editor and possibly not knowing more than you do. There is no vetting process here on editors. Another set of eyes is useful regardless.

It can be a trial and error thing, finding an editor, and may take some time. The good ones are often chockablock with stuff they are editing already, so they don't go around looking for more people to edit for.

You can learn a lot from editing yourself. Spotting someone else's problem areas of writing and seeing what is successful with their readership can sharpen your eyes on your own material.

Good luck!
:rose:

PS I found a good editor by advertising on here, as I didn't realise you weren't supposed to either. :)

Thank you. As a former newspaper editor, I'm well qualified for the job myself but I find that when you've been continuously looking at your writing you tend to miss stupid stuff lol. I read it and went through it, hubby read it and another user read it as well. I went ahead and submitted it. It's porn, it's not like I'm trying to win a Pulitzer with it. I'm fairly laid back about it, but it seems to really bother some people when there are errors. I use Microsoft with editor so it can't be that bad of a finished product :)

I noticed there were very few typos :) That is a big plus on here, some stories have really distracting spelling errors. It's fun to have an editor, though: someone who also looks out for the story posting and gets excited when there are good scores for it.

Microshafts editing tools are for office work and letters. It sucks at fiction.

Yep, no one can edit him/herself effectively.

I freely admit that what I'm about to say is partly because i had no luck finding an editor, but it's also true.

Both the site and many forum members present the likelihood of finding an editor in an eternally optimistic light. It takes lots of stars aligning to find one, so read backwards and out loud... :D

You can also get text to talk apps, which will read your story aloud to you.
:)

I've taken that approach for a long time. It's difficult for me to give my own writing a careful read; the words in my mind can be different from the words that are actually on the page. Reading it aloud makes me slow down and pay attention to each word. It also lets me check phrasing and pacing.

Also, to clarify, since that sounded whiny.. Editors are volunteering their time for what, i don't know. It should be uncommon, and it is. To those who edit, thanks.

I'm just lamenting that it's presented as if it's common to find one. It's not. (shrug)

I enjoy reading other people's stories and chatting to them about how to write, as I see it, better. We have a good laugh in the comments on the story. I often understand writing in general better, so my own writing gets improved, when I read stories that are either similar to, or radically different from, my own.

It's just nice to talk to friends about their writing in a more in-depth way.

Unfortunately I am up to eyeballs in stories I am editing and reviewing! otherwise I would have PMed DesireToBeDesir. However I am going to review her first confession. :)

If she is really struggling, and the story is as short as the first one, I might ... oops, is that the time? I must dash. ;)

Yes, it's another short one - just over 2000 words. I appreciate everything, I really do. I am a very lucky newbie :)
