One of my favorites , both the author and his stories seem to have disappeared not only from my Favorite list, but from Lit. His/her postings date back a while but not as long as others. Could that mean that the author has requested all the stories were erased from the site?
Really a fan of " alwayswantedto "
Any response appreciated.

Alwayswantedtoo pulled his stories from here because he was very ill/ he has cancer and his long term prognosis was not good.

He sent me a message when he left saying he was pulling his stories as part of getting his affairs in order because apparently his family did not know of his writing and he never wanted it discovered. He also didn't want it left here to be stolen once he was gone.

yeah, i don't get that at all.

The usual reason is that the author is making money from selling their stories and having them posted on a free site is counterproductive, or is against the terms of the on-line publisher.

But the explanation for alwayswantedtoo is given in a post above.

I thought that too. Because the ones that I saw disappear were pretty good. Never saw a crappy one disappear.
So my best bet would be that some authors pull them out because they're thinking of uploading them on amazon kindle instead of just for free.

However, would plagiarism play a role in that decision too? And how?(I saw quite a few discussions around stories being copied on other erotic sites or even on amazon).
I always wondered about such things.
1.Aka if an author comes up with a good story, why would (s)he publish ot on a free site instead of trying the paid options first? Personally, I'd post it here for free only if it didn't sell.
2.Besides the money thing, why do good writers expose themselves to the risk of intellectual property theft which is rampant nowadays? (Lit. doesn't seem to offer it's writers copyright protection, from what I see).
3.Once that happens and they see their Lit. story being plagiarized on other erotic sites or on amazon, how do authors go about it?
(I was just curious)

His story sounds plausible to me. Why would someone come up with such a classic line, knowing that (s)he would run the risk of being doubted and so on? Unless it's true?
Otherwise he would have said something vague in the line of : "I'm pulling it out due to personal reasons or just because".

It is a shame to have a desire and passion to write, and then feel one has to do it in secret.

well, people do make fun of you if they know, but that's life. people are dicks. you get used to it.

anyway, when i die i really don't give a shit if anyone in my family finds my stories. even that incest one that i wrote just because i was trying to stretch myself.

honestly, i don't think they'd really care.

i wou;ld, however, ditch the porn i have if i had fair warning of my imminent death, but that's different. that's just basically politeness. they don't wanna be handling the shit i used to jerk off to and i don't really want them to be doing that either.

I've never had the problem of friends or family making fun of me, but a few of them were worried I might have written about them.

that i am not worried about at all.

though some might think that about me as well. and they'd be right to to an extent. i borrowed their names.

because i liked them.

the names, not necessarily the people. like paige and becky. i like both names, but the girls i stole them from are both... well, let's just say they aren't my favorite people. still, i like those names. they're short, common but also just fairly pleasing to me.

Plagairism happens wherever a story is posted, whether here or on a paid site.

Copyright protection is meaningless in the USA. In theory original works are protected by the Berne Convention:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berne_Convention

In practice? Publishing on Literotica is publishing in the USA. UNLESS you REGISTER and PAY for copyright IN THE USA, you do not have any legal protection for your work.

Even if you do formally register your work, or rely on the Berne Convention rights because you are in another country, not the USA, your protection is still effectively meaningless.

If you have money to waste on expensive lawyers you can try to find and sue the plagiarist who is unlikely to have sufficient resources to pay your legal costs. Damages? Since you posted on a free site, you have no financial loss, so you won't get damages.

All that will happen if you try to protect your copyright through the courts is that your lawyer will make money and you will lose.

A DMCA notice to the server might work - see this thread:

http://forum.literotica.com/showthread.php?t=1055555

but all that might do is stop that one publication of your work.

I have been posting stories on Literotica, and before that on Yahoo Groups, for 15 years. My stories have been stolen and posted all over the internet, sometimes on pay-per-story sites.

I just accept it. I'm writing for my own amusement. If one of my stories appears on a bot-infested Japanese Anal Fisting Teenager site? So what?
Someone must have thought my story was worth stealing. :D

It is a shame to have a desire and passion to write, and then feel one has to do it in secret.

It's kinda like discovering a deep secret passion of a relative or a friend and then feeling through lament that it wasn't such a big deal that they couldn't have trusted at least you to know about it when they were still living. Unfortunately, that's just the way we're wired socially.

What was the name of that classic American artist who had this secret stash of found drawings and paintings, mostly nude, all of this woman friend named Helga that nobody knew they even had sessions for...Andrew Wyeth? Yep, that's him.

Not clear if they had anything going on together other than being model and artist, but...you know what human beans be doin'...

I'm sure Andy and Helga spent a lot of time making happy trees.

Many thanks, oggbashan.
Kinda disheartening for a writer I guess. On a different note, this is the trend nowadays. Just look at # news channels: they are so repetitive. You can't help but suspect that they've been sitting on their ass all day and copying and pasting other reporters' stories, instead of going out there and doing real investigative reporting.

I was also curious because I admire you guys for following your passion. Like so many people out there who had more 'artistic' pursuits in mind but ended up doing something more practical, I can't help but wonder. And I noticed (from the other forums) that a lot of people who write here have a more technical background, so I suspect that some might have a similar story.

On the other hand, the more 'artsy' jobs are often a dead-end. They are often devalued, and they can't help you earn your living in this day and age.
And I was talking to a musician the other day who went with his passion, and he told me that the grass isn't greener on the other side. That the routine and all the compromises that one makes in order to earn a living sometimes end up killing it.

I guess the best one would be to work part-time (if you can afford it) and do what you like with the other half of your time. Or full-time and sacrifice your leisure time. Which you guys are doing, in a sense.
I could never do it: too many sacrifices for me. Moreover, I have more of a rigid mindset and I wouldn't be able to compartimentalize.

Not many know I write and fewer know all my material. I'll own up to my BDSM stuff, the group sex and milf stories and my attempts at horror and romance, the taboo stuff I keep quiet because for some reason even though the characters are all over eighteen the word pedo gets thrown around.
