Over at AH is the Fucking Robots? thread about Robo-Sex and Teledildonics. I came up with this:

Hmmm, plot bunny. The first hackable networked sex-toy is a telegraph-driven solenoid dildo circa 1860. Unscrupulous wiretappers send bogus Morse codes making the device go wild, driving users (including poor Mary Todd Lincoln) to hysteria. The scheme is uncovered and broken by heroic young Tom Edison.

I hereby gift this to y'all. Don't forget cameo appearances by Michael Faraday and Samuel Morse.

True factoid - in the Victorian era, around the time you mention, a treatment for nervous conditions in women was to induce a hysterical paroxysm. Doctors administered them by massage, but eventually hand operated machines were created to speed the process.

No one here should have to be told what a hysterical paroxysm is or why the treatment typically had to be administered so many times to get results.

We treat Victorian as a synonym for prude. We do the Victorians grave injustice. They not only had smoking smut, medically induced paroxysms and servants sometimes used as sex toys, but the violet ray, precursor to the violet wand, dates from then.

There's no technical reason the machine couldn't have been controlled over telegraph lines, except of course what fun is inducing a paroxysm if you aren't able to watch? So while I don't think the plot bunny will hop in any site except an ardent steampunk one, the technology for powered dildos absolutely existed.

Tesla was very popular with the ladies, iirc...
