THE BLACK ECHO by Michael Connelly.

His first effort. Its a solid 5 stars.

Harry Bosch is a Los Angeles homicide detective assigned to the Hollywood Division. He catches a weekend murder of a drug addict stuck up a long culvert at the reservoir. And then the shit hits the fan for the rest of the book.

I guessed the end about 80% of the way into the read. I guessed wrong. The end is plausible and likely in real life, but I didn't like it. Its noire, what can I say!

Virtually every character is an asshole, including Harry.

What I dislike about the book has nothing to do with the writing. I want a different end!

I'm working my way through the series. I like them, but as usual you have to turn a blind eye at some plot points.

Interesting to see the character arc over the books (have you read the Aubrey-Maturin series by Patrick O'Brien, or the Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell?).

Yesterday I discovered that Amazon has a tv series about Bosch...don't know if it follows the books.

No to both questions.

Started my first Max Collins book, QUARRY. He writes like me.

The HBO Series is worth a look, mainly cuz of the actor who plays Bosch. Very spot on. They took a lot of liberties with plot but still good.

Hes written so many that Yes, a few are blah, but a sub par Connelly is still better than most mysteries I read.
Much better than Jack Reacher books imo.

The Poet is an excellent thriller, too.

I'll check it out.

Look into both of the ones I mentioned and see if they appeal.

O'Brian has the most pitch perfect vocabulary I've ever read. The pages add up and nothing really happens though it muddles along, but it parallels life on the sea...much nothing and boredom set against intense periods of action.

The Sharpe series chronicals an orphans journey in the military. All war action. Sean Bean played Sharpe in the cheesy British series, though the books are good stuff. I enjoy Cornwall's other series as well.

If you read them, try to organize them in the characters chronology...more interesting that way.

Huh, I'll check on HBO about Bosch...thought I saw Amazon.

I like Reacher, but the last short story seemed like a parody. Waiting for the latest novel to come up in the que.

Whoops Amazon is correct. Free on Anazon Prime...
