9 times out of 10, when I hear someone say it, it's said in a derisive manner. And I hear it a lot where I live.

But cats are awesome, and people are assholes. So, I'm all for it being re-defined as something more positive. Hasn't happened yet, though.

IMHO 'Cougar' conjures up the image of a mature upper-middle-class woman hunting young studs. The Wikipedia entry says:

Cougar is a slang term that refers to a woman who seeks sexual relations with considerably younger men. ABC News states that these women pursue sexual relations with people more than eight years younger than they are, while The New York Times states that the women are over the age of 40 and aggressively pursue sexual relations with men in their 20s or 30s. Rather than age, I think it is the age difference. I would arbitrarily say, an age difference of more than 12 years.

I would pose a correlated question. Is the older woman still a cougar, if she is pursuing a younger woman, rather than a younger man?

My answer would be "yes".

I'd say, even though the age between the lover and the conquest may be a relative number starting from being legal on upwards, because there is a concrete visual aesthetic attached to the term socially speaking, it's definitely at an age where a woman develops noticeable wrinkles on her skin, particularly her face.
