Well, the second plane I guess...

ISIS does in the civilian airline
Turkey does in the SU24. (for the moment, I am going to guess it was indeed in Syrian airspace, not Turkey)
USA backed Syrian Rebels take out the helicopter.
Not sure what group followed the pilot down and shot him in the head.

So whats a Russian to do? It will be interesting how this plays out. Any guesses?
Nothing good to come....
Maybe they will just drink it off....

“They're professionals at this in Russia, so no matter how many Jell-O shots or Jäger shooters you might have downed at college mixers, no matter how good a drinker you might think you are, don't forget that the Russians -- any Russian -- can drink you under the table.” A.B.

Vladimir Putin slams Turkey for shooting down Russian warplane near Syrian border

Syria rebels say they shot, killed one Russian pilot as he parachuted, fate of other pilot unknown

The Russian plane was supporting Syrian troops which have been on the offensive in an area controlled by several insurgent groups including al-Qaeda's branch in Syria, the Nusra Front, and the 2nd Coastal Division and the 10th Coast Division that includes local Turkmen fighters. The Turkmen are Syrians of Turkish ethinicity who have lived in Syria since Ottoman times.

Jahed Ahmad, a spokesman for the 10th Coast Division, said its forces fired at the Russian pilots as they descended.

Hmmm...I guess the Swiss didn't do a good job on teaching them the Geneva Convention in 2013.

Better to capture them, put them on trial for causing civilian deaths in support of a totalitarian regime and then shoot them. Much more civilized. It's only okay to kill when lawyers and priest say so.

The idea of taking ground fire or being strafed on the way down is terrifying. I would not wish it on anyone.

Makes me think of this story of the best 1911 shot ever made...
(No way this would be possible with the crap 9mm they issue today)

"On a mission to destroy a railroad bridge, Baggett’s bomber squadron was intercepted by Japanese Zero fighters and his plane was badly damaged. After holding off the enemy with the top turret .50s while the gunner tried to put out onboard fires, Baggett bailed out with the rest of the crew. He and four others escaped the burning bomber before it exploded.

The Zero pilots circled back to strafe the parachuting crewmen, killing two and lightly wounding Baggett, who played dead in his harness, hoping the Japanese would leave him alone. Though playing dead, Baggett still drew his .45 and hid it alongside his leg...just in case. A Zero approached within a few feet of Baggett at near stall speeds. The pilot opened the canopy for a better look at his victim.

Baggett raised his pistol and fired four shots into the cockpit. The Zero spun out of sight. Although Baggett could never believe he had shot down a fighter plane with his pistol, at least one credible report said the plane was found crashed, the pilot thrown clear of the wreckage with a single bullet in his head.

If Baggett really did shoot down a fighter with his 1911, it has to count as one of the greatest feats ever accomplished with a .45.

Baggett survived two years in a Japanese prison camp in Singapore and eventually retired from the Air Force as a colonel."

Dear Recep

Sorry the guidance system on our cruise missile developed a fault.

Zeros were such a menace due to lack of almost any armour plating protecting pilot. Wickedly light and maneuverable. You didn't dogfight Zeros. But very susceptible to any fire. Not even self sealing tanks, I believe.

A lucky shot! Even at stall speed and close that is one hell of a deflection shot. Even going away from you. An American pilots seat would have had 2" of armoured steel behind it. Almost enough to stop a cannon shell. No .45ACP round would have even made a dent.

the footage they posted of shooting down the Russian rescue helicopter is obviously fake/propaganda....

While they still may have, it is looking doubtful.

Looks like American instructions to muslims on shooting down Russian helicopters is still being put to use..

Hell yeah! Mujahidin fighters cleared their skies once they got Stingers in Afghanistan. Nothing like a man portable system to put the fear of Allah into air and armour. Steal RPGs off Nicholai. Feringhi give you Stingers! Allah truly is Akbar! I mean these guys kicked Russkie butt right out of their country!

This is a terribly dangerous situation. One that can easily get out of hand and escalate.

They had no armor at all and no self-sealing tanks.

A bit of exaggeration. The Sherman tank had frontal armor of only 2"

This won't go unpunished. Even if the Russian aircraft violated Turkish airspace, it would have been only for a matter of seconds. I won't be surprised if Putin orders a shootdown of a Turkish plane over Syrian territory in retaliation. There will be consequences.

Obama opened his yap in a press conference and blamed the shoot down on Putin for supporting the Asshead regime instead of the rebels.

Obama is fixated on overthrowing Asshead, somebody kick him in the ass please so we can move pass this crap and keep a lid on WW3?

I mean FFS at the rate of speed, the jet would have crossed in and out of Turkey's airspace in around 10-15 seconds.

Correct probably upwards of 8- 13mm. Must have been thinking 1/2". Still safe from rifle cartridges.

Russian jet hit inside Syria after incursion into Turkey: U.S. official

http://news.yahoo.com/russian-jet-hit-inside-syria-incursion-turkey-u-010811956.html

"WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The United States believes that the Russian jet shot down by Turkey on Tuesday was hit inside Syrian airspace after a brief incursion into Turkish airspace, a U.S. official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity."

As I suspected. These kinds of brief incursions are common. There's been an unwritten rule for decades that they don't call for a shootdown. This is a serious breach of protocol.

Turkey and Russia have been at odds against one another since the fall of Constantinople. They hardly need an excuse to take pot-shots at one another. By the time an aircraft is in your airspace, you might be to late to stop him no matter his intentions. Russians and Americans have shot down airliners which stray into restricted space or look threatening. "Mistakes" happen.

Fingers crossed cooler heads prevail. But Ivan now has vested interest in killing the 10th Coastal Division, not just ISIS in the Sinai.

How many seconds would an American aircraft have in Iranian airspace before some one threw a SAM at it?

http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/turkey-russia-rules-of-engagement-1.3334096

Turkey said the Russian jet flying over Syria ignored 10 warnings that it was nearing, then intruding, on Turkish airspace. Russia insisted its plane stayed in Syrian territory.

When asked if the Russian fighter jet could have accidentally strayed into Turkish airspace, von Hlatky said that military aircraft are equipped with GPS and "they would know where they are."

The other critical question is whether the Russian plane dropped a bomb on Turkmen rebels fighting against the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, as a Turkmen commander has claimed.

Russia is providing air support to Assad. It has also joined the bombing campaign against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) in Syria.

On Tuesday, the Russian military jet appeared to be targeting the rebels in Syria, not ISIS militants, von Hlatky said.

If Turkey shot down the plane to help the Turkmen rebels in Syria, von Hlatky said, that opens up a "broader dynamic here … in the context of a war zone."

Turkish planes have long been dropping bombs in Syria. They will be considered fair game now by Russia, unless I miss my guess. And why not?

Turkey has been a NATO member for over 60 years; an attack on any NATO member is an attack on every NATO member - the core of that union is that all members will come to the defense of each other.

Putin ain't in Crimea anymore...

What do you think will happen if a Russian jet shoots down a Turkish jet making a bombing run in Syria?

Turkey claims the Russian jet invaded their airspace after repeated warnings - legally, they have every right to repel such an intrusion.

Russia has no such legal right to shoot down a Turkish plane in Syria since it's not their nation, thus, it would clearly be exactly what any logical person would see it as: an outright act of retaliatory aggression; in fact, a premeditated act of war against a NATO nation.

Me? I'l love to see Putin do it...

Turkey wasn't repelling anything. The incursion, if it happened, lasted only seconds, and the shootdown occurred in Syria. There's been an unwritten agreement for decades between the NATO countries and Russia, formerly the USSR, that we don't shoot down the other guy's planes over minor incursions. My guess is the other NATO members are pissed off, secretly, at Turkey for opening this can of worms.
