Right now, the Washington Redskins are under fire for being politically incorrect. And in this case, I agree, its highly offensive. I mean, "Redskins"?. Imagine if a team was called, say the Boston Beaners, Cincinnati Chinamen, or Houston Hajjis? The list goes on an on. I am not sure why Washington has dug there heels in over this, since to most people the term Redskin is high on the list of the most agitating of slurs.
Chicago Blackhawks sort of skirts the line. In my opinion, it is not overly inflammatory and certainly not near as derogatory as Redskins. The original intend, long before political correctness came along. was not meant as derogatory. But pressure is mounting on them since they are so conspicuous, being the champs. Its an easy fix though, change the name to Black Hawks and have a black hawk bird as the team logo.
I hear the Florida State Seminoles actually licensed there name from the Seminal tribe. That ended that controversy fast. And one that has not gained notice is the Cleveland Indians. Likely because no one ever needs to notice them
And how about Minnesota Vikings, Notre Dame Irish, or any team named after an identifiable group of people? In many cases, these sports teams where named when it was acceptable to use ethnic groups as mascots.
So what about future sport team names. What is the modern criteria to name a team? It would be hard to come up with a name that does not offend someone, somewhere out there.
