Differences between male and female readers

Hello Everyone, I am reasonably new to the forums.

I have recently had an interesting little insight into the minds of male and female subs, which I thought might inspire an interesting discussion.

I recently uploaded 2 BDSM stories. The first is a M/f spanking story with themes of Domination and slut training but nothing too heavy, it is a short story about a naughty girl at college who gets sent to the Head and he deals out some punishment in the form of spanking and then fucks her.

And the second one is F/m story with more extreme themes of watersports, public humiliation, pegging and is all together more on the extreme side.

Now, obviously these stories are written for a different audience and I deliberately wrote the Duchess to be more fantasy and Tabatha to be more "realistic" - Tabatha is also tamer so as to appeal more to little's and female subs not slaves where as Duchess is very much written for male slaves and those that are into the more extreme themes.

What has really interested me is the feedback. Tabatha is scoring very well, currently around 4.3 and has been favourited a few times and I have received some lovely messages but there are no public comments where as The Duchess is scoring much lower, around 3.6, but has gained 4 comments, 1 flame and 3 very positive. So I started to wonder is there a difference between male and female readers on here in the way that we view, vote and comment on stories? And do extreme themes attract more extreme reactions, I think at least 1 person voted 1 star for Duchess but as far as I can tell Tabatha has only really gained positive votes, 4 and 5 stars.

So how likely are you to post a comment or vote on a story? If you thought a story was average would you vote 3 stars or not vote at all - how amazing does a story have to be for you to vote 5 stars? And when would you ever vote a story with 1 star?

I just read Tabitha's Taboo. It was ok. I was a little confused as to what position he put her on the desk when he fucked her. The misuse of the word wandering instead of wondering was distracting. More detail of the spanking would have been nice.

As for how likely I am to rate a story, I haven't rated one in a while. When I do, I usually want to because it was great and I want to give it 5 stars. When I read a story that is just ok, I am most likely to not vote at all. I am not one to write a bad review. I will give a compliment now and then.

I think I will read the Duchess now, just for fun.

I am a female sub. I read Tabatha story. It was ok but not enough emotion in it. It didn't turn me on. The idea of female Domme stories don't really appeal to me if I am reading to get sexual gratification. I haven't read that one.

It is unlikely. It takes a lot of guts for some authors to put there work forward. Many of them seem more interested in receiving praise and encouragement than constructive criticism or analysis. I assume most people would be uninterested in my opinion.

I more often rate a story than comment. I view it as useful because it's hard to gauge what's worth reading on here and what isn't sometimes. Ratings can help. I wouldn't vote a story with 1 star unless it was grossly incomplete, unreadable, or lacking in basic story elements somehow.

I don't think it has anything to do with gender particularly - it's to do with the squick factor.

If you write fluffy stuff well, you will get lots of nice votes and comments because it doesn't trigger a bad reaction in people. They can relate to it, put themselves in that position and probably have lots of 'personal' fun while reading it

On the other hand, if you write extreme stuff, only those people into the extreme scene you are writing about will dig it, and everyone else will vote you down for not particularly doing anything for them in the hot and heavy department. Which is why ratings are only a guide at best.

You might write the decade's tour de force for non-con, but if a bunch of reluctance lovers read it, they will mark you down, because it will do nothing for them but squick them out. I wouldn't worry too much

I am a man. I do occasionally comment on stories if they elicit a strong reaction. I sometimes rate them as well.

I try as much as possible to look at the quality of the writing and how the story is told. If the content or genre is not to my liking I just don't read it. The only time I would rate a 1 is if it is just really poorly written (I don't think I have ever given out a 1).

My sense is that a lot of people on here who do give out 1's do so because of the content/genre as opposed to the writing. To me that is like going to a horror movie and complaining that it is scary. This is especially a problem in loving wives. Lots of anon hide behind the idea that certain stories don't belong in that category but it really isn't up to them to decide and in most case the title and tags make it clear what to expect.

It is interesting how many commenters seem to believe that getting low ratings is somehow a reflection of the quality of the story. The quality of any art form, no matter how rudimentary. is not in its popularity. If you write in a genre that 90% people don't like you'll get low ratings, but its only the other 10% that were your target audience anyway.
