What I have learned is to research your favorite artists. There has got to be someone who had interviewed them along the way and inevitably they have answered the question "who has influenced you musically?" Then seek out those artists that influenced them.
And work backwards from there.

Eventually you will end up in jazz and the blues. I lean far more on the blues spectrum.
