Good plot. Awful writing. What do you do next?

I read a lot of stuff here, particularly in the longer formats. Serials and novels are much more my thing than one offs or pure stroker stories... And since this is an amateur site, there are obviously lots of awful stories. We've all seen stories start wonderfully. Good characters, maybe even with a new idea or plot that hasn't been done to death, and then...boom. 10 pages of poorly written twiddle about 47 inch tits or 47 pages of how much she needs to be violated to overcome... Blah blah blah.

So. What do most of you do next? Read it? Toss it? Skim it? Click to the last page and hope everyone dies?

99% of the time I don't bother with LIT stories, few are worth the candle. But so are 98% of published books and stories. If the material doesn't impress me within two or three paragraphs, I move on.

Don't read anything that doesn't make you happy. Stop, move onto the next story. Is there a certain theme/interest you're looking for? I feel like stories that don't have stroke-value get nailed by bad scores -- when my story has stroke-factor, the score is better. *shrugs*

This site doesn't allow for a cordial method to give writer's feedback. It's either 'good' or 'you suck-die in a fire'. *shrugs* It's a shame because without having reasonable feedback, authors fumble along 'guessing' if things are working. At least that's how I feel.

I'm also writing for free so...poor unfortunate soul gets to read my poorly-edited stroke fantasies

What to do? Move on. Maybe leave a nasty comment if you are so inclined.

Reality: LIT employs no trash filters (other than Laurel) nor reliable tags. And diversity matters. Someone's treasure is your trash, yada yada. It takes all kinds, yada yada. E pluribus fucking union (one from many) yada yada. 95% of everything is crap, true enough.

Hey, some of us remember a time before TV remote controls. If you didn't like what you saw, you had to pick your fat ass up out of the sofa (after setting aside the bag of greasy potato chips) and walk over to the telly and TWIST THE FUCKING DIAL to change channels, click-click-click. Might have to goose the Fine Tuning ring too. It's a lot easier now. Click on Previous.

Consider this metaphor: LIT is a sidewalk littered with Tootsie-Rolls embedded with gems and dog turds embedded with glass bits. When you determine which sort one is, and it's the turdy sort, you do not probe further, nor do you kick it or pick it up and throw it. No, you step over it. You move on. Easy.

For me, I'm looking more for new stories, new ideas, possibly a good fantasy or three. When I find a killer idea coated in slop. I file the idea away, then skim skim...uh huh... Skim... Flip to bottom to see if anyone dies.

I know I'm missing some good ideas by avoiding the kinks that I find unwholesome, but ick, I just can't do it, captain.

For me, reading stories is a little like listening to music.

What sort of music do I like? Jazz – but not all jazz. Blues – but not all blues. Chamber music – but not all chamber music. And so on.

When I start listening to something and it doesn’t appeal, it’s no big deal; I just move on to the next track. Or the next album.

Some of the music that I enjoy is probably not that good. And some of the tracks that I click over may well have (some of) the critics waxing lyrical. That’s just how it works. As I say: it’s no big deal.

No. That's not quite right either. Im not shopping for ideas to write about. I have several things going now. I'm looking for fun ideas to think about. Its why I read. But that's why I'm irritated when I find a great idea in a story that I find lacking. I'd rather the idea was something as easily discarded as the story... And when I give up on the story, I always find myself wondering... I wonder what the author did with that? Its a shame that I couldn't get through it.

I'm a bit mystified by your statement above (bolded). We have a range of scores to give. We have a place to post comments - they don't have to be gushing, they can offer constructive criticism. I try, if I see any redeeming feature in the story and like what the author tried to do, to give some feedback - because that's what I'd like the readers of my stories to do. And finally, if you're worried about getting flamed by other commenters, you can send feedback privately. I've received critiques this way before - flamers don't bother with this.

To the OP: it all depends on my mood - if the writing gets truly awful and annoying, I move on. There's not enough time in the day... But fun or interesting ideas and good writing keep me trying, and then I'll often comment, and almost always score. One other thing - I think giving a bad score without commenting why is a cop-out and an insult. The author learns nothing. That's my definition of having been trolled.

^^^^^ Reminds me of the Vaudeville Days when some wrestlers wrestled themselves and got entangled in the ring ropes and needed help to get free.

I guess I'm just pointing out that it's rare to get constructive comments rather than black or white. (Scores can be and are tempered with, I don't feel it's a good indicator on what 'readers' feel.) That's all. I know people /can/ leave comments but in my experience it's not as common. Mileage my vary obviously. My private feedback has been 'more' -- but my scores don't indicate that statement. *shrug*

Have you tried out fetlife? It might be more along the lines on 'what kink floats my boat' ? They have some stories but mostly it's 'lifestyle' writing and poems and durty pictures.

I liked what legerdemer suggested to contact an author privately to give them feedback that might help them in a future story. *shrugs* I dunno. Maybe it's not worth the effort if you're just surfing around.

I wasn't referring to anything you said, but the Original post itself. I think the attitude of its slop because "I" became disenchanted it a little full of ones self.

As for real name, the OP is an alt. Read their contest story-its damned funny, it really is-but way too much 'insider' knowledge of what goes on in the contests threads for a newb. Funny how it works her though, I've already gotten three PM's of the "who do you think they are" variety.

As for being judged, I think that is up to the individual's take. If you leave comments open you are saying "I want to know what you think" but its up to the author to decide how seriously he wants to take it. I don't see it as being judged, I see it as 'opinion' and let;s face it, we all get back to back comments of "you suck" and "You're great"

which goes back to my post of one person's slop is...etc...

But if your comments are on, you're saying hey, take your shots.

No disrespect intended, but some of the writing here is awfully bad... And it should be, many/most of the writers here are beginners. The first stuff I wrote was all slop, as is some of what I write now. That's okay.

My question was not intended to be disrespectful. More of a...hey, what do you people do when you like the idea, but not the execution.

Seriously though: I try very hard not to get down on other authors here on Lit. They don't get paid, as far as I know and if that's wrong someone please tell me, and you didn't pay to read it so why get upset if their stories are crap?

Besides, like others have said, what is crap to you is what does it for someone else. I may not like reading the number 47 two times in a row, but that may be just the thing to bring off someone else.

Now I'm having flashbacks from work "47 brand" is old school jerseys, hats' etc....made to look throw back and worn out. a coupel years ago my company made 5000 displays for them.

I spent two months in their warehouse surround by the number 47.
