On Friday this boy aged 15 went to Friday prayers at the Parramatta (Western Sydney) Mosque. He was stirred up a bit there by a firebrand preacher - details unknown as yet.

He then went to the Police HQ in Parramatta and after a lot of yelling and shouting shot dead the first person to emerge from the building - Mr Curtis Cheng (58) an ethnic Chinese Australian who had worked as an accountant for the police for 17 years.

Special (part time) policemen in the vicinity engaged the assailant and shot him dead within seconds of the murder.

Farhar's family say they know nothing of the incident or reasons for it, however in related news it appears his sister went missing on Thursday and it appears that she caught a flight to the middle east, possibly Syria.

It appears the boy may have been motivated by terrorists but there are insufficient facts known to date to be certain.

Farhar was a Kurdish Iraqi and Sunni.

If you don't even understand the basics of hardware you have no business having an opinion about what sort of hardware should be available.

"Semi" in quotes as if a semi-automatic is some how sort of a submachine gun.

Semi-automatic, for the thousandth time means that another cartridge is loaded and in position for the shooter to fire after each time the action cycles. No different than a double action revolver that advances a cartridge into position as you pull the trigger.

No one fires a semi-automatic pistol at 600 rounds per minute. The best shooters out there might be able to empty 10 rounds in 20 seconds with reasonable accuracy.

More likely than not the shooter used a semi-automatic pistol. His only other choices were a revolver (5 or 6 shots) or (highly unlikely) a single shot match pistol.

This SCARY technology is over 100 years old.

Uh no Smooth. Masjid is a Persian word for a Mosque. For example the Mosque around the Kaba in Mecca is called the Masjid al Harram.

I find it interesting that the knee-jerk reaction is for bound to be ineffectual violating the second amendment on a fools errand to limit access to gun. The horse is already out of the barn and down the lane on that.

No one seems to like the idea of limiting the first amendment. The only speech they want curtailed is "hate speech" which is anything that offends the left. When someone apparently on the right committed mass murder, they did away with the "inciting" confederate flag. No one calls for holding Imans responsible for their direct calls for violence. That is a pretty easy line to draw.

Plenty of other countries, the same ones held up as models for gun control, limit speech. One cannot possess Nazi paraphernalia or espouse their ideas in Germany. Ironically, it is probably protected speech to call for Jihad. Against Jews. I don't know that, though.
