can you view the detailed rating for your story anywhere? Like, how many people voted 5-stars, how many 4-stars and so on?

No, there is no breakdown available.

Many authors who care about such things have developed their own formulae to reverse engineer an approximation of how many fives, and ones they've received.

Start with the assumption that most of your votes are either fives, fours, twos or ones. (very few readers vote a three.) then play with the numbers until you come up with some approximation that suits you.)

Yes, that I can do. Just wanted some specifics, because I have a strong feeling that I have a lot of 5's, but as soon as my story goes above 4.50 - I get a 1 that brings it down. Then it climbs back again - and downvoted again, and It happened like 4 times already. Maybe I'm just paranoid... =\

Nope, you're not paranoid, and you're not alone. A Red H attracts one votes for a wide variety of reasons. Eventually, if a story is good enough it will pass 4.50 with enough votes a low vote can't hurt it.

Well that's exactly why I wanted detailed info. I'm not really into maximizing my rating - for me comments are much better indicator as to what I did right or wrong. Its just that its pretty frustrating - not knowing how many real votes there are, and how many are just there to lower the rating.
I see stories with rating, like, 4.95+, and i would be lying if i said that i dont want to be closer to that

Plus there are periodic sweeps of all stories that will get rid of those out of bounds votes. 1 bombs. Maybe even a 2 or a 5. The program does detect and delete duplicate votes from the same IP, etc.

So not only watch your score, but watch the vote count too.

The formula is: (new average x new number of votes) - (old average x old number of votes) = total value of votes between old and new. Unless the site has run a sweep in between, which will screw up the numbers.

If you're rating above a 4.5, then you'll find that even if nobody's bombing you, the voting will look uneven: a 4 will have more effect on your score (downwards) than another 5. But you'll be getting more 5s than 4s. So your score will gradually increase with the 5s, then suddenly drop when a 4 comes in.

I'm not against any ratings, if they are fair. I can't care less if a 4 has more impact than a 5. And I know that some of those 1 star ratings are what people really feel, and I respect those votes. 1 guy really hated my story in the comments - its his right and its cool. I just feel against those 1-stars that I get a lot when I'm above 4.50. I mean, if my total is this high than most of 1-stars are probably rigged, I feel. And the fact that each time I climb back up just shows that I get this much positive grades than negative, because to negate a single 1-star I need several 5's...

How often does this bot program go through the database? I'm really curious to see if it changes anything.

Sweeps are done at random and irregular intervals except during a contest -- and especially near the end of the contest. There may even be more than one "sweeps script" but the owners are quite close-mouthed about sweeps for fraudulent votes -- and that is really the only concern of the sweeps; fraudulent votes (including maliciously fraudulent votes) are swept without regard to the "value"of the votes.

But contests run every month - does it mean there's at least 1 sweep per month?

Probably.

I don't follow the votes and comments on my stories close enough to know for sure. Of course, after 15 years, they've all accumulated enough votes that neither sweeps or fraud affect them much, anyway.

No, there is no breakdown available.

Here's an important question, Harold, that others may want to know.

Can a story have so low a rating that it is removed. Is that possible or has this happened in the past ?

I don't think so. Why would you remove it? It's not like it does any harm - just being there. As long as it doesn't break any rules, I think it stays.

Nope. I know of one author who has several stories with "perfect" 1.0 ratings. Stories can be removed if they're reported for breaking site rules (most commonly, under-age sex that wasn't picked up by the mod first time around) but not for ratings.

Probably so, but it depends a bit on what you're posting. Some stories will polarise readers - e.g. if I post a story about Hillary Clinton I'd expect to get a lot of love and a lot of hate with not much in between. Cheating wives and M/M sex can also get that sort of reaction. If you're not posting controversial content like that, then it may well be that somebody's trying to keep you from getting a H.

And the fact that each time I climb back up just shows that I get this much positive grades than negative, because to negate a single 1-star I need several 5's...

Yep. If you're averaging 4.50+, then you're getting at least seven 5s for every 1.

Roughly once a month, in my experience, but it can be irregular.

You can request a sweep of your own stories. To do this, open one of them, find the "report story" button (it can be hard to see) and report it with a comment like "author requesting sweep of all my stories for suspected 1-bombing". I've done this before and it can make quite a difference!

I see. I know my stories aren't the best. I think they fulfill some rare kinks in people that is not the norm, but definitely not vanilla sex.

Thanks, Nezhul.

I don't know of any policy that would remove low-scoring stories. I've run into that policy other places, but not here at Lit.

Some stories will polarise readers

That's why I don't run around screaming that my rating has to be in 4.90+ or something. There are bound to be people disliking the story. For my story I actually expected a far less rating, because it's rather dark. What I didn't expect, however, is people saying that it's a Horror and that the category is wrong (although it's placed rightfully in NonHuman, because, tentacle Alien). Some people were disappointed to find a dark, heavy story in NonHuman section, and that really surprised me...

The other thing is that some readers might seek out stories with a red 'H', and then if they don't live up to the reader's expectation, they might vote down. (Also tags that the reader feels are misapplied, like a 'femdom' story that takes a leaf from The Taming of the Shrew.)
