One-Third of Americans Would Be Fine with the Military Taking Over

Blame the 2016 Republican presidential candidates (cough, Donald Trump, cough) or the recent stock market meltdown or Americans' general conviction that the country is going to hell, but a recent poll showed that one-third of U.S. citizens aren't satisfied with their government. In fact, 30 percent would support a military takeover, The Guardian reports.

As for me... HELL NO!

Sure I don't like the way this country is being "Lead" And I hate what this chicken scratching country has become but, we are just not set up for that third world shit.

At least not yet.

I could be convinced that 30% of the people in this country are disabled by a stupidity the dimensions of which are barely approached by their support for a military takeover.

Over 70% of people in this country still believe JFK was killed by a conspiracy, and a significant percentage of those believe it was a U. S. government conspiracy.

Not only can you not fix stupid, it is often a challenge to plumb its depths.

That is not what the poll shows.

1. There was no poll question about satisfaction with the government.

2. The actual percentage who answered "yes" to the question, "Is there any situation in which you could imagine yourself supporting the U.S. military taking over the powers of federal government?" is 29%. 29% is closer to one fourth than it is to one third.

That number is probably much, much higher than 30%. I'd suspect that the number of people who would be fine with a military take over actually pretty nearly approaches 100%.

First things first, the poll flat out admits that online polling isn't particularly accurate.

Abraham Wyner, director of the undergraduate program in statistics at the University of Pennsylvania, said that online polls are suspect when it comes to getting accurate results. "People who are participating in an online poll are generally attracted to that poll because of some variable," he said. In other words, people who respond to the poll tend to feel strongly about the poll's subject matter, so they're inherently biased.

In short, the poll is probably crap. That said beyond this point I will be pretending it's results are accurate as I don't have any specific data to refute it.

Second the exact phrasing of the question was "Is there any situation in which you could imagine yourself supporting the U.S. military taking over the powers of federal government?"

That's a pretty far cry from FGB's headline " One-Third of Americans Would Be Fine with the Military Taking Over."

One is could you see a situation where it might be necessary and the other is it necessary now (or at least acceptable.)

Since the pol showed that nearly double the amount of Republicans could see this being necessary than did Dems that's not even that hard to figure out. Remember when Obama was building his Civilian Corps that would rival the US military in training and equipment and was going to round up white people and put them in FEMA camps for reeducation or. . .I honestly never really could follow that batshit crazy idea but if the US government was actively usurping power from the Constitution yeah I'd hope the military did something. They took an oath, at least I did when I was in and didn't say to protect the Constitution against anybody but the President and his merry band of muggers. It said against enemies foreign and domestic.

In such a situation where the government WAS the enemy and by some act of God the military wasn't in on it who the fuck would any of you put in control during the interim? I mean we have a LOT of shit in the country wouldn't hold together particularly well if the government had to be taken out of power. I can't think of anybody else with remotely adequate resources to even attempt such an overtaking and even fewer with any particularly compelling reason to hand the reigns back.

By .33%.

The poll question, "If elected leaders of the federal government began to violate the Constitution would you support or oppose the military stepping in to take control of the federal government?" yielded 43% support.

Correct. I did misrepresent that part.

Online polls are utter crap. Utter. Crap. And corrupt soldiers are more likely to kill you than are corrupt politicians. Not a good choice IMHO.

The question here is are the soldiers more likely to BE corrupt. The poll clearly suggests that the people don't believe so and I'm fairly inclined to agree.

again, online polls are bullshit. even the waste of bandwidth article acknowledged that fact. quit pretending that it matters.

It merely said that they are biased. That doesn't mean that they can't provide information.

no, it means that any information that they do provide is completely useless.

Perhaps to you that's what it means. Whatevs, you're entitled to your opinion if you like.

Stop shooting!

I only copied and pasted it!:)

If such an event ever took place I fear it would be the death spasm of our United States as we know it. I fear civil war would break out as states formed into groups because without an elected Government in charge of the whole country why stay together?

Do you really think some other form of Militaristic government will work here with an armed population already pissed off with the leadership we have had?

Even the most patriotic soul know when to look homeward and for something better.

No, hell will be coming to breakfast if such a thing should happen.

That is what I think.

That's true, that is the headline the article went with. I stand by it's not an accurate portrayal. :)

While I don't disagree with you that it would be a very bad thing in the hypothetical that the government was that out of control who outside the military would have a prayer of holding the country together long enough for anything resembling an election? Given how (excuse me) goddamn fucking conservatives act and think even if Obama had rounded up every man and woman who supported Romney and put them to death on live TV the U.N. coming into save anybody he missed wouldn't be greeted as liberators.

As for the states breaking off it would be difficult for most of them. It could happen. That's not a possibility I dismiss out of hand but I'm really curious how many of the states that want to could even make a solid attempt at being remotely self sufficient.

would that be a military coup?

how's that going in thailand?

I'll take a military Coupe de Ville, for sure.
But I will not tolerate a military cow.
Do USAF doves give military coos?

But I digress. A military coup in USA would be redundant. This is already a police state run by a military-industrial complex more-or-less willingly supported by cowed taxpayers. Why should the bastards screw up a con that works?

Shared greed, power and arrogance=trouble
