"for one thing, there's the $127,820 price tag"
LOL NOPE.
A guy from Talkeetna wiped his out on the ice last year, Definitely, not a car for snow country.
No. But we already knew that, right?
I suspect they could make a comparably solid car for snow country if so inclined.
They make less expensive cars. And, as with any new tech, the price is only going to come down, down. The important thing is that the platform is so solid.
Some people have called Tesla a battery company, and that's fine with me. We've needed someone to lead in these areas for such a long time.

Forget electrics. Have you bought a new car lately with an internal combustion engine? Last time I checked, the cost of the over 100-year-old automotive vehicle technology has been on a steady upward curve since I bought my first set of wheels for $2,010 (new) in 1972.
The only thing coming down is the value of a car AFTER you buy it.
Most anything can be made for the right amount of $$.

I agree with that statement. There's a quality to this company though that seems to be more about research and development than production.
It's probably just me.
I've not looked hard into Tesla. Their house batteries are a smart deal, but not a panacea.
I haven't bought a car since 2005. Why are you griping about electrics AND internal combustion engines. What's your plan for personal motorized transport?
I haven't bought a car since 2005. I'm pretty sure that was my last internal combustion engine.
Do I have to have an alternate plan for personal motorized transport to gripe about the cost of a new car?
I'm simply taking issue with your suggestion that the cost of a $127,000 Tesla is going to come down significantly based on a maturing technology. Even if it did, my contrary suggestion is that, based on my experience with the automotive market, that price will once again rebound to the $127,000 level quite quickly.
My point was nothing more or less.

I have read that their house batteries are impressive, but wildly overpriced compared to what you can do with contemporary storage tech. Though from talking with you previously, I know you would understand this much better than I do.
I have an engineer nephew who works for Ford in power plant R&D. He says they buy Teslas and tear them apart to reverse engineer and still can't figure out how they get the mileage out of them that they do. He's clearly embarrassed to admit this, so I think he's legit.
I'm probably just naive, but there's something about Musk that makes me feel he's about more than just monetizing technology.
Let me know when the range reaches "however long you can hammer the fuck down" and it cost 30k.
Till then 124k is just too much for a family sedan....I'll have to stick with the Honda where I won't care if kids smear boogers, shit themselves, projectile vomit, spill milk I don't find out about until it's 90F and humid etc etc.
I'll just be happier than a pig in shit the day that Elon gives all the taxpayers money he received back. Money out of my pocket for a car I'll never drive and have no desire to.

I'll just be happier than a pig in shit the day that the tobacco industry gives all the taxpayers money they received back. Money out of my pocket for a product I'll never use and that kills 500k people in the US each year and untold additional $ in healthcare costs, and unascertainable costs in human misery."

I have a Honda, too (2005) and it's the right car for the current job. I think your "however long..." is an enthusiastic standard.
I'm pretty sure if I had $120K free to spend on a car, I wouldn't. There is a lot about this car that I think can be downstreamed to the rest of the auto world. And, if someone wants to give me one of these cars to enjoy, I say "thank you."

Obviously you think so strongly about it that you think every single taxpayer in the nation should pony up to the benefit of a commercial enterprise? Fine.
The things that pass for "thought" these days are beyond my ken.
