They copied Western ideas about modernization: their entire argument for their conduct in China closely parallels the arguments whites had for their treatment of non-whites, largely copying ideas of empire, supremacy, and eugenics from the West.

Considering that Japan has almost none of the natural resources needed for war, and their entry to China was awarded to them by the Western powers at the end of WWI, at a point where it was clear that Japanese imperial intentions were strong, I'm going with it's way more complicated than that.

And considering that exactly the cultural traits you are saying were detestable were verbatim copies of attitudes in America at the time, I just don't find it so simple.
