Had a 78 that leaked a gallon of oil every 50 miles. Since I worked in a garage, I just topped it off with bulk gear lube.

My father never changed the oil in it. The minute he gave it to me, I changed the oil and the leak begun. The sludge inside was keeping the rear main seal plugged.
