Either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying.

Clarke had a bunch of really good quotes.

“No utopia can ever give satisfaction to everyone, all the time. As their material conditions improve, men raise their sights and become discontented with power and possessions that once would have seemed beyond their wildest dreams. And even when the external world has granted all it can, there still remain the searchings of the mind and the longings of the heart.”
― Arthur C. Clarke, Childhood's End

If an alien lands on your front lawn and extends an appendage as a gesture of greeting, before you get friendly, toss it an eightball. If the appendage explodes, then the alien was probably made of antimatter. If not, then you can proceed to take it to your leader.

"Mr. President, anyone who can cross millions of miles of space will be able to take care of themselves when they get there. Don’t start something you can’t finish." – Albert Einstein (talking to President Truman about the “shoot-them-down” order of UFOs flying over Washington DC on July 19, 1952 - As quoted by national radio host Frank Edwards, date unknown*)

What most people don't understand is that UFOs are on a cosmic tourist route. That's why they're always seen in Arizona, Scotland, and New Mexico. Another thing to consider is that all three of those destinations are good places to play golf. So there's possibly some connection between aliens and golf.

Stephen Hawking's been watching too many Hollywood movies. I think the only kind aliens in Hollywood are the ones created by Steven Spielberg - 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind' and 'E.T.,' for example. All other aliens are trying to suck our brains out.

Babies have big heads and big eyes, and tiny little bodies with tiny little arms and legs. So did the aliens at Roswell! I rest my case.

I don't want to be the embarrassment of the galaxy to have had the power to deflect an asteroid, and then not and end up going extinct. We'd be the laughingstock of the aliens of the cosmos if that were the case.

Who's More Pro-Science, Republicans or Democrats? - Neil deGrasse Tyson

tl;dw:
Republicans win, and this video was made before Obama gutted NASA.

Yeah, it was only Obama who gutted NASA. As if Bush fully funded every program, announced new initiatives and gave NASA a larger budget.

Not to mention Republicans using every opportunity to defund parts of the NASA budget which conflicts with their views, except when it would cost them votes because their district relies on leeching off the government largess created by NASA.

How have we gone an entire thread without Sagan?

For myself, I like a universe that, includes much that is unknown and, at the same time, much that is knowable. A universe in which everything is known would be static and dull, as boring as the heaven of some weak-minded theologians. A universe that is unknowable is no fit place for a thinking being. The ideal universe for us is one very much like the universe we inhabit. And I would guess that this is not really much of a coincidence.-Carl Sagan
