Another Democrat challenges Hillz!

Former U.S. Senator Jim Webb announced on Thursday he would make a bid for the White House in 2016, becoming the fifth Democrat to challenge frontrunner Hillary Clinton on what is expected to be her march to the nomination.

Webb, 69, who represented Virginia in the U.S. Senate from 2007 to 2012, formed a presidential exploratory committee in November and called for more “positive, visionary leadership” in the United States.

Should make the first debates interesting.

Webb, a decorated war hero who served in the Vietnam War, is known for his outspoken critiques of U.S. foreign policy and military strategy, and his support for American troops serving overseas.

He has said national defense, criminal justice reform and economic issues that benefit the middle class will be the focuses of his presidential campaign.

Well, he was a Republican before it was advantageous for him to declare as a Democrat.

I'd love to know what he considers being "against" the Confederate Flag because I would argue that anybody who is for the Confederate flag and if that makes me divisive then call me the Great Goddamn Wedge because I want to be divided from those fucks. I'm not calling for a ban. The woman who pulled the flag down should go to trial and then in a sane society someone pardons her but if not oh well. I'll even go as far as to say that I'm not a fan of the companies that have pulled it down. Why? Because to me there comes a point when it stops matter who is doing the censoring. We can argue till you're blue in the face about how you can stock what you want in your stores but an App that isn't carried by Apple, Amazon, Steam or (I forget the last big one) isn't an app. It's a program you wasted time making. An item that Ebay, Wal-Mart and Amazon all agree to pull from shelves. . .well yes I've seen that young rap star who hangs out in front of my local mall and is always selling CDs out of his trunk. But it's not because he's too raw for stores, it's that he's one guy. And I do feel we need to address that functionally there is little difference between sufficiently large business and big government. If anything we have fewer legal avenues to go through with sufficiently large businesses especially depending on what you're talking about. Like I guess I could go without cable if I was throwing that big a hissy fit but Time Warner isn't so bad that I'm about to just not have television over them.

I'd love for the Confederate Flag to vanish for the same reason you don't see anybody wearing Hammer Pants. Nobody wants them. I do think the states that have them should pull them down but I wouldn't sick the feds on them I'd just make sure that if I had a tv show that the ending credits would be "if you live in this state you're a fucking prick for not taking care of this!"

That's interesting. Are you aware that Hillary was also a Republican at one time?

Are you seriously going to try and pull off comparing someone's political turn around in HS, to someone's switch parties after decades? You say that about Hillary as if it's some great secret oOooooOOoO Have you heard?!?!?!?!?! Anyone that knows anything about her knows she got her start in politics in HIGH SCHOOL in the Goldwater campaign.

ANCIENT HISTORY

Webb is a centrist more than anything else. He calls out the racism of folks like Trump while noting the more fringe liberal tendencies of Sanders (though to be fair, Sanders is about as fringe as Upton Sinclair or Eugene Debs or Norman Thomas, maybe even a little less than that, so he's basically what would be moderate or even conservative in Canada or Europe)...but, still, in America.

On the other hand, I disagree with Webb about the Confederate flag debate to an extent. All in all, though, I think that Webb is one of the last New Democrats, which was what worked in the 1990s. Hillary, ironically, has abandoned that legacy of her husband's.

In any case, I find Webb more acceptable than Hillary. Warren, Sanders, and Chafee, too. Hell, even Biden would be better. But if Hillary gets the nod, with this current crop of Republicans running, even she will probably get my vote.

In the last few days we had events here that ought to give Democrats and Republicans pause. A few miles from here the county manager of a moderate county pulled down a Confederate flag from a pole at a county site. The county commission then voted unanimously to hoist it again, and 8 miles of cars with Confederate flags drove by the site. I didn't measure the line. The cops say 8 miles.

The Democrats and GOP may have pissed off lotsa people.

Rule of thumb, every pissed off customer represents 4% of all pissed off customers.

Webb is an opportunist. (You might check out what he did to the Naval Academy. Signed up to lecture for a year but only wanted in to interview for a "women shouldn't be in the Naval Academy" article and left in the middle of the night without fulfilling his contract when he had the article written).

He was a loner in the Senate, and I don't think he has an ounce of influence in the Democratic Party, which may be telling in any expectation he has to get a presidential race nod from the Democratic Party. The same problem McCain had with the Republicans, but a thousandfold more detached from party support.

A good player in the debates, though. I presume Hillary will pretty much ignore him knowing she's put in her party dues in spades.

Not like Jim Webb was a Republican. He served as a Republican in a Republican administration.

Cohen, a Republican, was Clintons Sec of Defense for a while. How about Obama's GOP Sec of Defense. Youre so fucking stoopid.

Webb was a declared Republican when he served as secretary of the navy, and he very publicly changed parties when he was seeking the Democratic nod for the Senate in Virginia. (That's why he got the nomination and national Dem support--it moved a likely winner from the Republican column to the Democratic column.)

Once again, you're showing your ignorance, James. (But nothing new in that.)

Are you sure the article was about women in the Naval Academy? I was under the impression it was about women in combat.

Yes, it was about training women at the Naval Academy for combat. I was working with the Naval Academy at the time, and they were absolutely livid that he had lied to them about his purpose there and had walked out on his contract. He made a lot of waves in the Navy, prompting Reagan to note in a memoir that, when he left as naval secretary, the Navy was delighted to see him go.

The bottom line on him is that he has such a hodge-podge of conflicting positions that there is very little base for him to count on--certainly in the Democratic Party. He didn't get along with much of anyone during his one Senate term. He didn't develop a support system to make a second run. Having strong, attention-getting opinions isn't a bad position to gain voter support, but you can't get to the voters without going through a party support system unless you put up one hell of an independent run or if the party system is in shambles. That being the case, he'd do better as running as a Republican this time--or even making waves as an independent.

He's not perfect, no, but he's so far the only real centrist in the running that I can see.

Yes, they are. The question of integrity depends on why they changed their mind.

By the way, Jim Webb isn't/wasn't a thing like the Dixiecrats.

Personally, I'm still a Republican....very still. :D

That's a reference to what Senator David Hill said after William Jennings Bryan was nominated by the Democratic National Convention in 1896.

"Senator, are you still a Democrat?" he was asked.

"Yes, very still," Senator Hill answered.

That being said, I'm leaning very Democratic this election cycle. The Republicans will need to nominate someone actually sane to get my vote this time, and so far, this field is chock full of nuts.

Yeah, when your field is crazy enough to make even Hillary seem the lesser evil....that's not good.

You know I don't get to say this often. You and Colonel Hogan give me faith that being a Republican does not by definition make one evil, racist, or brain damaged. These are likely causes or symptoms but they are in fact separable.

It also gives me a little more room to talk shit about libertarians and to a less degree independents. Because I'm a stron believer that probably 80% of current libertarians are actually Republicans who just look at the crazy on the field for themselves and say "nope, I will not associate with evil, racist retards." and instead of cleaning up their house which is a find house with a great history they move to a dinky little shack down the street. Which wouldn't be nearly as bad if they'd vote libertarian consistently enough that the Party had to abandon the crazy to stand a chance but at the end of the day guys like Ron Paul know which team they are actually part of and it's not the libertarians. I'm also a strong believer that no such critter as an independent exists in real life. That's like those freaks who claim to be neither dog nor cat people and we all know that if you only had room in your boat for one of them which one is coming. You might feel bad about it later or even at the time but you made the decision years ago and you know it. No point in lying.
