If I'm not mistaken there was some nut on one of those talent shows who was lighting fireworks off of his body.

Where, where?

I do see this as Darwinism in action. I don't see people offing themselves, even through stupidity, as amusing or something to joke about on the open Internet where loved ones might be cruising, though.

I agree, but the net in general does not.

Somehow this accident warranted two separate articles on yahoo's homepage.

My sister says all the time "I know I have to die someday, but God, all I ask is to not die doing something stupid." She will usually then look at me and say, "But for you that's inevitable."

Another man killed after launching fireworks off his body — this time in Texas

Texas man was killed early Tuesday morning after attempting to launch fireworks from his chest.

Witnesses said Justin Bartek lit a large, reloadable, tube-type firework called the Medieval Knight off his chest and was injured about 1:30 a.m. while fishing with friends at the popular “dollar hole” in Columbus.

The 28-year-old man was taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where he died.

Two Indiana men were also killed over the holiday weekend in separate incidents involving fireworks, and New York Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul lost a $60 million contract offer after badly burning his hand in a fireworks mishap.

Another Texas man, 28-year-old Tommie Woodward, was killed early Friday by an alligator after mocking a warning against swimming in a lake near Orange, about 150 miles east of Columbus.

“Fuck that alligator,” Woodward said, according to a witness, before jumping into the water.

The area where this happened is south of Beaumont, Texas. About 60-80 miles east of Houston. This area has a maze of bayous, one main river, and lots of old rice canals. The area is infested with gators of all sizes.

This happened at a restaurant/bar that is also a boat launch/fishing camp. The dock has dozens of no swimming/beware of alligator signs as does the boat launch area. Part of the bar/ restaurant hangs out over the water. You can see gators swimming around as you eat and drink most of the year.

The locals know about the gators and so do visiting fishermen. I've been out in a 16 foot boat and seen gators from three feet to several feet longer than my boat.

So no he wasn't yelling "fuck the gators," he was yelling "here comes lunch." Suicide by gator. Now there is a plot bunny.

NT News has a fairly regular "idiots swim out to crocodile traps and take selfies" feature; traps are baited with meat and placed in spots where large, dangerous crocs have been spotted, so swimming anywhere near one is REALLY asking for trouble. One of my brother's workmates made the front page that way. (He lived.)

My favourite "idiot" (for Darwin) was of a bloke standing on the roof of a very crowded train (I think it was in India) to touch the overhead electric supply.
At 11kV plus, there was a bit of a spark and then his hair burned.
Not pretty, but a salutary lesson for railway enthusiasts, maybe?

Darwin is a perfect storm of alcohol, bored young men, and huge ambush predators. Some of the bigger crocs will take buffalo or horses.
