Is it considered bad form not to respond to a private message?

I answer all the pm's I receive.

If I don't receive it, it means you're on my ignore list and shouldn't have been such an insufferable prick.

I print out all the 'I want to lay you over my bonnet and fuck you till you scream' pm's and I'm slowly wallpapering my bathroom with them all.

It would be in poor taste to not respond with a sounding pic to the stupid PMs.

It's only bad form if the pm was an unsolicited dick pic asking to be rated. You broads need quit keeping a brotha hanging. It's just plain rude.

Some women get flooded with PMs... they'd need a secretary to respond to them all.

Some people put zero effort into their PMs but want you to reply with your life story.

So, reply or don't reply, but don't feel badly if you don't. All conversations come to an end. Some just end before becoming a dialogue.

I only respond to PMs after they have provided me with a list of references. I'm still waiting on RawHumor's references to check out.

I was the one who sent it, if that helps. Otherwise vague generalities in regards to protocol are also informative.

I don't think I was being a "dick".
Maybe it got lost.

There are a few reasons to not respond to a PM:
  1. The person may not have logged in since the PM was sent
  2. The person may have a bunch of PMs to process and will do them all in one batch.
  3. Perhaps you've done something to offend them
  4. Some PMs don't create much room for dialogue, as I mentioned earlier
  5. It's possible the person has you on Ignore. If that's the case, they'd never know they got the PM from you.
  6. Perhaps they're in a relationship and consider PMs to be off limits.
  7. Kittens

Why does life have to be so complicated?

It hasn't occurred to you that you may scare them? After all, your screen name roughly translates into Pussy-With-Fangs-That-Will-Bite-Your-Dick-Off

I used to try to respond to every one. Until some ass hat started calling me names for being nice but not sucking his dick....

umm

where are you?

where am I?

effin' idiot... we did not even live on the same continent...I think. Maybe we did I just deleted the poor misguided soul and only heard from him four more times before he gave up.

Nothing passive about it. Society does function on a nebulous, unwritten set of protocols though.

Don't you think?

Is it part of said unwritten set of protocols that people are obligated to return private messages on an Internet forum? If so, I broke this rule many, many times in my first few weeks here.

I do not believe people are under any obligation to respond to a PM. Most I've sent have received responses, but I can think of two that didn't. My conclusion: neither of those individuals wanted to talk to me, not that some social more had been violated.
