A more plausible scenario would be a prim & proper southern belle is hiding her wounded younger brother from capture by a group of three union soldiers. Her brother is a spy & he has important time-sensitive info that he needs to get to General Lee. She uses her sexual wiles to keep the union troops from burning her home to the ground.

Her brother is hidden behind a false wall. He witnesses the debauchery that his religious widowed sister partakes in to ensure that he doesn't burn alive. He's ashamed that he cannot do anything. I don't know about that scenario. They didn't really bathe that often in 1861. I gotta believe that she would be sasquatch-hairy from the her crotch down to her ankles.

The nice thing about fiction is the author can write whatever they want! Think about porn, or even mainstream movies, with a historical bend... Did the female actors have shaved legs and pits? Did all of the actors "look" clean? (Meaning no obvious dirt on their bodies or flies swarming them. lol)

Hell, an author could write about a "parallel universe" or similar sci-fi theme... Didn't Picard or Spock go to planets/universes that looked like historical eras on Earth or something?

At their extreme of the crinoline fashion in the 1860s, the skirt's diameter was six feet or more. Slightly later the crinoline became flattened in front and much longer behind, sometimes extending eight feet behind the wearer.

The whole point of a crinoline cage was to provide bulk for the skirt without the number of stiffened petticoats that had been necessary.

The crinoline cage was metal framed, leaving a large empty space under the skirt, certainly ample to hide a small or average size man. Breathing would be no problem. Keeping hidden while the woman walked? That would be difficult but feasible.

You just have to give it a farcical, whimsical tone, sort of a wink at the reader, saying in effect, "just go with it, it's a story!"
