Do you people know how much diamonds cost?

Years ago 60 Minutes did a story on the diamond industry.

They were in Russia and shown just one of numerous storage facilities. This one room was roughly 15' square and along three of the walls were shelves stacked with bags of uncut diamonds.

Though DeBeers no longer had its monopoly, diamond producers still collude to keep diamond prices high through withholding of supply. If the majority of diamonds mined were put on the market the price of a ring would be a few dollars. Diamonds are relatively plentiful so it is only because of the collusion that their prices are high.

I am not fond of jewelry save a necklace that was my grandmother's. I do not understand the fascination for bling, but to each his/her own. Personally, I'd much prefer a shared experience over a piece of jewelry.

Kbate, $9K seems so high. Would she want you to spend that much?

Yes and no. She bought herself a $1900 pendant for her birthday last autumn and hangs it on a $8.50 silver plated chain.

The ring has to be at least worth what she buys for herself.

Also, Jupiter's core may well be one vast diamond. But nobody is allowed to mine it because of the vicious diamond lobby.

Well, that won't stop me. I'm going to crowdsource my way to victory.

I didn't think Jupiter had a solid part.

Or are you just being Jovial?

$9950?

Naaah, I'm good. I ain't making bank like LeBron or Leo DiCap.

If you did have that loot already lying around and I were her, I'd say phuck the ring and have you give me a fully-tricked out Mac tower with a hi-def jumbotron monitor.

THEN you take me to the most expensive Japanese restaurant in town for a week, order top shelf sake.

And maybe a helicopter ride sometime during that Wednesday! :D

We did the helicopter ride over the grand canyon several years ago. We don't drink, even good sake or good wine. I have a cheap 2007 HP laptop running Vista - no need for kick-butt monitors.

It's a new horse or the damned ring.

It does sound like she'd like a beautiful ring, but it's not necessarily the price that's important. I'm sure you can find a beautiful and meaningful ring.

Congratulations, by the way. :rose:

Do you have any heirloom stones that you can have set in a setting you design or choose?

Like your mothers old ring or your grandmother.

The real reason for doing it is the kids. We'll still have to fight the state of VA in order to legally adopt each other's child.

That silly word changes everything as far as estate law goes and ends a ton of worries should something happen to me. Perhaps something like falling out of an apple tree and puncturing my lungs and nearly dying - not that that would happen, again.

* the family heirlooms went to my brother and his wife. Mum wasn't real happy about my way of living and his Ward and June Cleaver ways got the prizes.

Yes, I understand. The only thing different about your relationship will be a piece of paper and a couple items of jewelry...and long overdue legal recognition.

Come back to this side of the fence then you get the ring.

And you can get married in a church, you heathen.

You really think that? Have you ever been married?

Things change. People change.

It's a nice when people change for the better but it's rare. I'm with Johnny on this one.

Jewelry has never been my thing. I've not worn any in months. Dressing up is putting on earrings.

You mean to tell me you aren't fucking married yet? I thought you were married! Well fuck. That's why I never sent you naked pics.

I picked mine. $7k and it's not even allowed here.

Don't be a cheap bitch.

Not allowed?! Are you wanting blood diamonds or sumthin?

Yes, I've been married.

I think people grow and learn. It may seem they "change" but it's not really that.

Unless I've misinterpreted kbate, she and her partner already feel married to one another. This will be the path to legal recognition and protection, so it's not changing the relationship, just the terminology. I could be wrong, of course. I do not know her.

Pfft, what's $7k Aussie, something like $4 real money?

We aren't married, and if you're better looking, less of a cunt (that's already questionable), and less mouthy (except when asked), perhaps I'll dump her and take you instead.

bitch.

Pfft.

Same goes, bitch.

I feel faint.

I can't believe you didn't tell me this before.

I think I need to lie down.

Yes, they cost the lives of exploited workers and the rape of the earth. But I guess you're okay with those things.

With the money that you could buy her an expensive ring is better to put it in a bank for your future kids.

Lol, no, that's not what I meant.

Unfortunately gay marriage isn't legal down under, but we have engagement rings. Mine is very pretty, it sparkles and everyone loves it and notices it.

I'm not big on jewellery either, although I often wear a necklace and earrings. Love my watches, too.
