Being a Christian and doing right...

Hi everyone. I joined this site a couple of years ago. I wrote a story about my life experiences and perfected it with the help of members. I then decides that the story conflicted with my religious viewpoints and didn't post it. Should I say, the things I have done I am ashamed of and didn't post my story.
I joined then to work on my English writing... I'm an exchange student from Brazil. I told myself that this was a great place to work on my writing and disregarded the thoughts of maybe there was something else I wanted here. I have struggled a few times with wanting to write here and get to know you all. I am wondering if any Catholics or Christians have also had the same struggles as me. Your input is much appreciated. Thank you.

If you feel like you're being held hostage by religion, you already know the answer to your troubles.

You can be a spiritual person for self and not have to commit to a group that limits your personal happiness.

I am Catholic, but not a very good one. I also struggle with wanting to do the right thing. But I don't think abandoning your faith is the right answer. Maybe you could talk to a priest or maybe there is a Catholic women's group nearby who could help you find a spiritual director who could help you understand your struggles. Maybe they could help you channel your creative energy into something more positive? Good luck!

I am a part of a woman's group now and part of the reason i joined was to talk about my issues. The more I listened to the group the more I wanted to keep silent about my struggles with sex. Thank you for your imput. The college offers free counseling. I am thinking about going...

I agree since I don't have money to spend on it. I'm ready to figure myself out or give up on the church. But that will create new problems for me... I'm just a little confused right now.

I'm from Brazil and attended mass there with my sister. The church was my second family. I even taught educational classes at the church for youth in my community. I live in the U.S. now and have found a church here... If I walk away from it now it means it's all been a lie. My faith has also kept me from being wild back home and here at college. I am afraid of what I may do or who I will become.

Growing up is not a lie. You are free to be the person you become, instead of the person you think everyone else wants you to be.

You are in a different culture, not just the US but Texas.
Remember, you are only here for now and things always look different from that perspective.

Everyone I know who is at all religious has had tests of faith. What happened before is not a lie, it is what you were at that point in time. You may feel different now, and then back to your old self when you are home again.

The nice thing about Catholicism is the confessional. You can always sow any wild oats, confess your sins and be absolved.

As I have gotten older I realize that most things are not black or white but varying shades of grey esp. religion. Everyone takes what they need from it, and are not as strict about the rest.

They are lots of different groups and beliefs even within the Catholic Church.

If this is mainly about sex, think of how many people have sex before marriage esp. Catholics. Think how many couples have their first child 6 months of less after marriage.
If you are going to have sex, learn about birth control, use it and also use condoms so you don't get any diseases.

Who do you want to be? What does the church say you can't be?

Also, if you look at the history of the Catholic Church, rules change depending on times and who is in power.

Look at the basis of the Church, what is it? The 10 commandments, to live as Jesus lived? I knew some Catholics who lived that way. They gave their money away like Jesus, fed the poor...

It is none of their business what you have done. What you taught then was what you believed at that point in time. They don't even disown priests who commit crimes.
