The last 3 weeks I have been visiting the country where I grew up and catching up with friends, one or two of which I hadn't seen for over 60 years. Starting at Thurso on the North coast of Scotland, I have gone slowly through the north west and the Hebrides, taking in Durness, Stornaway, Ullapool, Gairloch, Kyle of Lochalsh, across to Skye and then down to Fort William before heading back to Glasgow.

It struck me a couple of days ago that in all this time I had not seen a single black face; JBJ's idea of heaven? Mebbe we should buy him a one way ticket?

Me pal spent a year on Berneray filming the remaining shepherds and crofters. It was an experience that had a profound affect on him. He eventually named his only son after the shepherd who was his host.
