ok, does anyone in the UK know if i can apply for my first passport using my decree absolute along with my birth certificate/bank stuff etc to prove my i.d, or do i have to change my name by deed poll first back to my maiden name?

almost everything is in my maiden name - wage slips, banking, phone/gas/electric etc... - except the g.p/gov't/council which require me to deed poll before they'll do it.

Here in Oz, you can just take your Decree Absolute with your Birth Certificate to every dep't, private or gov't, and change back to your maiden name on the spot.

just been looking online, and under ''Applying for your first passport'' it says if i was born before 1983 (tick) all that's showing is Birth Certificate or adoption papers. so i guess that means i can get it in my maiden name without deed-polling. i'm going to ask in the post office tomorrow, to see if this can be confirmed, and if they're uncertain,i'll try to phone the london passport office that arranges the interviews to see if they can clarify for me. thanks

Your Decree Absolute is your final divorce document, issued by the court.
It's a legal document and can be used to prove you no longer use your married name.

well, i was able to use my maiden name for work, to open my bank account, to pay utilities and so on, but the ''official official'' stuff - National Health Service/gov't departments all want a deed poll. i think the way Oz has it set up is the right way, or even that it should be set as a default to optout of IF you wish to keep the same surname possibly due to your kids or whatever.

it's not so expensive - £29 online to change your surname back, a further £5 to change your title (jeezus)from Mrs to Ms, and another £2 per extra copy. this is cheaper than it used to be: used to be you had to go to a solicitor to get it done and it cost almost £100 altogether - i always had something more pressing to use a spare £100 on.

I went to change my daughter's name when she was little, I moved 3 times, I didn't complete the paperwork in one state, so the State disagreed with the Social Security office.

Eventually we had to ultimately pay for a judge to make a declaration, because she wasn't legal anywhere.

You have the choice here. If you want to keep your married name, you can do so by simply not going to all the trouble of visiting every dep't with your proof of divorce.
Or - you can take the paperwork with you and change back (usually recommended to do within 6 mths of your Decree Absolute being issued.)

Because your Maiden name is also legal, that's all there is to it.
If you want to change to another name entirely, then you have to do a Deed Poll......but you can organise to do that in your divorce hearing which simplifies things.

yeah, i was reading about it online, Ogg i plan on asking at the P.O tomorrow for clarification.

i'm a bit wary about sending originals through the post - i was considering booking an appointment with the passport office, where i might receive my passport the same day or within the week. if i pay an extra £3 the originals will be returned securely. apparently.

no rush just yet, just getting my ducks lined up. thanks
