Harriet Tubman should be the first woman on the $20 bill, according to a new online poll.

The survey was conducted by the advocacy group Women on 20s, which is pushing to have a woman's face on U.S. paper currency.

The organization sent President Obama a petition Tuesday asking him to push for the change.

The campaign has drawn a lot of attention. More than 600,000 people have cast votes in the online poll in the past ten weeks, including celebrities like Susan Sarandon and Ellen DeGeneres.

Harriet Tubman, an abolitionist who led slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad, would replace Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill.

Since clearly I don't know the history of my paper money who was the first woman on any sort of paper currency? The only women I'm aware of at all on (US) currency at all are Susan B Anthony on the dollar coin and (not gonna look up the spelling) Sacajawea on the gold colored dollar coin. But since you specify she'd be the first on a twenty I assume there is a woman who's been on some other bill, perhaps one that just doesn't see much circulation?

That would be pretty fuckin' cool...

My gramps was majorly into notes...he had them going all the way back to some of the very first American paper notes circulated all the way up until the 90's. So while I'm no expert I have laid eyes on a pretty decent chunk of our currency history and I can't recall ever seeing any US bills with a woman's face on them.

It might only be the reporter's wording.

In any event, those two coins mentioned are the only American ones I can think of that feature individual women on currency.

Andrew Jackson will be glad to get off of the twenty dollar bill. He was a gold standard guy and adamantly opposed to paper currency.

I say she should be on the $10, replacing Alexander Hamilton. Sequoyah should be on the $20, replacing the man who did the most damage to the South Eastern Civilized tribes.

maybe you can get some more welfare

Thanks Lady F!

Just curious was that a bit of trivia you knew off hand or did you take a sec to look it up?

Already knew it. I must assume it isn't easy to Google (if you don't already know) since none of the articles I have read mention those bills. Journalists are quite shitty these days.

Getting paid in the Army in Europe meant getting stacks of $20 bills. I got a few with HAWAII stamped on them (occupation banknotes from the 1940s) and once got an oddity with Washington's face on a $20 bill. I think that one might have been an old $20 gold certificate.

Oh, I just didn't bother. That would have required opening a new window, typing and clicking and honestly there are enough people around here willing to work that if it's something where you don't so much care as are a bit curious it's much easier to have others do the work.

Why are you being so bitchy and insulting? Can't this simply be a normal conversation?

First, you started it by basically accusing me of being unable to google. Second if that's your idea of bitchy you need to frequent another board and absolutely nothing I said could in anyway be construed as an insult, especially not to you.

Are you a journalist? I said journalists are shitty, and that is why Martha Washington isn't mentioned in an article. I said nothing about you nor was I even considering whether you chose to google or not. Everyone isn't out to attack you, ya know.

Nor you, again I said nothing that could even rationally be construed as an insult to you. Hell it should have been construed as a compliment thanking you as one of those kind people who will go and do research if asked kindly yet you managed to get butt hurt.

What are you talking about? I am not "butt hurt" as you put it. I am just tired of every conversation on Lit going down this road. You thought I was insulting you for not googling and I explained that it was not my intention. Why can't you just accept that? Never mind, I have no interest in arguing with you because of course an argument is exactly what I will get from you in response.

Except your the one who started down this road. While I did feel insulted I did not pay you back in kind. You however questioned why I had to be a bitch instead of moving on like the adult you claim to want to be treated like. So please do the world a favor and stop pretending you're somehow better than this. You start way more shit than someone who claims not to want any drama could ever do.

Check the common denominator on that one toots....

Tip: It's not everyone else...it's you.

You thought I was insulting you for not googling and I explained that it was not my intention. Why can't you just accept that?

Because you're a rude fuckin' cunt about it ya dumb bitch.

Just because you think you're so amazingly good looking and desirable (LOL) you get to be a fuckin' asshole about everything without consequence doesn't make it so.....speaking of bitch oh look another fine example!

Never mind, I have no interest in arguing with you because of course an argument is exactly what I will get from you in response.

No, it would be pretty fuckin' pathetic.

Andy, may you rock on forever on our $20s!

Read a history book sometime.....

Andy was worse about keeping his word than Obama and absolutely without a shred of honor or even human decency. He was a world class scum sucking, mass murdering shit bag and isn't fit to be on ANY currency much less the 20 as there are easily+ 100 historical American figures far more worthy of the distinction.

Tubman being one of them...

did he give you welfare?

Jackson was no friend to the Native Americans of North Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee. He had them forcebly removed when land speculators wanted their land..

Yeah, someone we should hold in high esteem
