You are quite right when you say that many are looking for the same thing you're looking for, but don't you think that it is a one in a million chance that you will find the person you are looking for? further more, how many do you think believe in finding a connection in online-chatrooms? I am always curious as to what kind of connection people want to make and what do you have to offer. Are you lonely and this is like a dating site for you? Do you like to browse and want someone to share observations about posts you see. Do you want roleplay?
These are always so vague and the similarities between all of them...might as well be cut and paste. My suggestions to increase your chances:
Get an avatar, even if it's not you, it helps to make you not seem blank and empty.
Brag a little, this is the perfect opportunity to tell everyone how great you are
Fill out your profile, women do read them
Be "something" unique and identifiable. Funny, smart, serious, sarcastic... You need to give yourself a personality
Ask non sex related or fun sex related questions on your post that anyone can answer. Then you don't need to bump yourself.
Record a vocaroo or soundcloud. People like listening to those. Don't know what to say (a lot people, including me, don't). Tell us a story, recite your favorite movie lines, play an instrument, speak in a foreign language. Say something that is meaningful to that person you want to meet.
Finally:
Go visit the playground. There are so many nice people there. It's easy to talk on the threads and if you are playful and respectful, people do talk back!

Adivice to pretend?
Did you really ask him to pretend? seriously? He makes himself much more interesting...puts himself out there...well an fine, how can he be so sure that the other person he thinks he has finally made a connection with is not pretending as well? I agree that there are a lot of good people out there....This guy might be one of them....so, let him attract them on his own merit...why pretend? and that is said with all due respect.

You misunderstood, an avatar doesn't have to be a picture of yourself, it can be something you enjoy or a picture you like.
