GARLAND, Texas (AP) — The FBI says agents are searching a Phoenix apartment as part of the investigation into the deadly shooting outside a suburban Dallas venue hosting a provocative contest for Prophet Muhammad cartoons.

FBI spokesman Perryn Collier on Monday confirmed the Phoenix residence is being searched for indications of what prompted the shooting Sunday that left two gunmen dead and a security officer wounded outside a center in Garland.

ABC News cites a senior FBI official in reporting that one of the gunmen, a resident of the Phoenix apartment, was known to authorities and was the subject of an investigation. The ABC report says the man was convicted five years ago of lying to federal agents about plans to travel to Africa, in an apparent attempt to join a terror group there.

Two gunmen were killed after opening fire on a security officer outside a contest for cartoon depictions of Prophet Muhammad and a bomb squad was called in to search their vehicle as a precaution, authorities said.

The men drove up Sunday night as the contest in suburban Dallas was scheduled to end and began shooting at a security officer, the City of Garland said in a statement. Police officers returned fire, killing the men.

"Because of the situation of what was going on today and the history of what we've been told has happened at other events like this, we are considering their car (is) possibly containing a bomb," Officer Joe Harn, a spokesman for the Garland Police Department, said at a news conference.

Police aren't aware of any ongoing threat and had not received any credible threats before the event, Harn said.

Harn said it was not immediately clear whether the shooting was connected to the event inside, a contest hosted by the New York-based American Freedom Defense Initiative that would award $10,000 for the best cartoon depicting the Prophet Muhammad.

Such drawings are deemed insulting to many followers of Islam and have sparked violence around the world. According to mainstream Islamic tradition, any physical depiction of the Prophet Muhammad — even a respectful one — is considered blasphemous.

In January, 12 people were killed by gunmen in an attack against the Paris office of the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, which had lampooned Islam and other religions and used depictions of Muhammad. Another deadly shooting occurred the following month at a free speech event in Copenhagen featuring an artist who had caricatured the prophet.

The Curtis Culwell Center, a school district-owned public events space, was evacuated earlier Sunday, as were some surrounding businesses. Police blocked off a large area around the center Sunday night. There was a heavy police presence, and police helicopters circled overhead as bomb squads worked on the car.

Hold on there, NEM. We (in the U.S.) can never make Islam "illegal." Nor should we! American Muslims are overwhelmingly good, patriotic, loving family members, excellent neighbors, and very good at convincing their kids to go by the rules and get a good education.

However, I agree with you that there is something else that goes by the name "Islam" that is not a religion, but a political movement. Adding the word "radical" in front of the religion's name is not only inaccurate, in my opinion, it does injury to the peace loving American Muslims among us. The solution is simple, however.

American Muslims should drift away from the terms Islam and Muslim and return to the older term Mohammedans. Not because it is more accurate, but because there needs to be some way of distinguishing the religion with the political movement.

Mohammedans ought to be treated with honor, respect, and afforded all rights under our laws.

Islam should then be declared a predatory foreign power; its adherents would have to register both Federally and with their local police as Agents of a Foreign Power. Failure to do so would result in relocation to a special gated community in New Mexico where they could check out any time they like but could never leave.

You would be amazed how quickly the Mute Muslims of America would step up and declare themselves Mohammedans. Of course, if these people also engage in improper behavior, they can be relocated to MuzzyLand there in New Mexico so as to be with their own kind.

First, I have never defended ANY organized religion, excerpt to say they are not as bad as Islam and never have been. Second, you haven't proven anything. I don't even know what you are trying to prove.

In particular, I don't see how you or any of your kind on this forum can defend the religious discrimination and misogyny that is perpetrated in the name of Islam.

Has the Catholic Church ever advocated the stoning of adulteresses, for instance. Keep in mind the words of the Nazarene: "Let he who is without sin cast the first stone."

Yes, Jesus said that because people in his community were actually going to stone an adultress. Everyone except Jesus thought it was the right thing to do.
