Here is something we can all agree on

For those who aren’t familiar with the practice, many “payday loans” are essentially a form of usury. They’re just relabeled with enticing nicknames and a side order of intractable debt brought on by monster interest rates. Usury has been outlawed for much of the human race’s civilized existence and receives way more Biblical tsk-tsk’ing than, say, providing medical care to the uninsured or consensually sexing someone of the same gender. Yet here we are.

Under the bi-partisan 2006 Military Lending Act, loan rates to military families were capped at a mere 36 percent. But ahhh those moneychangers. They’re some savvy fuckers. Lenders quickly adapted, finding loopholes that enabled them to continue collecting huge interest payments (even huger than 36 percent!) while warming their vibrating foot baths with the smoldering embers of our veterans’ credit. The current NDAA was supposed to change that. While the cap would remain at 36 percent, elaborate new rules would close loopholes upon the bill’s passage. That is until the House GOP, and definitely not the lobbyists at the American Bankers Association, moved to push back the effective date.

Republicans, thy names are DICK!

And I think we can all agree, supporting the troops means looking after their interests, like they were your sons and daughters, right?

Don't get the idea I'm defending anybody, because I consider these usurers to be scum also, but I was under the impression the loans were paid off on payday, hence the name.

The changes have now been passed by committee and the bill will go before the House for a vote. http://www.militarytimes.com/story/.../2015/04/30/hasc-ndaa-lending-rules/26622041/

ETA: Why do you believe such shitty, biased sites as the one cited in the OP?

Considering the fact that my citation was loaded about 11 am 4-30 and the one you cited was 3:45 pm 4-30, and I like the Wonkette's snark.:)

Also the Republicans put forth the amendment to fuck the troops, they were only thwarted by

"We’ll just let Hero Congresswoman (and hopefully future Senator) Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) do everything.

[Duckworth], an Iraq War veteran, will introduce an amendment to the NDAA bill that would strip out the Republican language delaying predatory lending protections."

So who are the Dicks in this story?

I haven't read the proposal and I don't know how the members of the committee voted, so I can't really answer that. I do have a very low opinion, however, of most lenders such as the ones being discussed.

Meh. Go to a military town. Buy here/pay here, strip clubs, shady mortgage companies, pawn shops, electronics stores that finance worse than paydays, for-profit "education" offices, ripoff tax preppers, and other ilk abound. If anything it's like the ghetto or downtown in Podunk, nowhere. Places to part 19yo men who never had a job, money, or slutty GFs before are the landscape. The military will garnish your check for almost any debt IF your sergeant doesn't walk you down to the scammers and make you pay cash in person. Local politicians own and run the scam institutions, and sometimes make it to Congress. Why would they EVER kill their golden goose? Why do this for soldiers and not everyone? Real, effective financial education would rock the world of numerous political donors. Every big bank has its fingers in the financing of this stuff or own them as shareholders or owners of subsidiaries. Subprime products for unsophisticated borrowers makes bank. They have known for a long time where to find suckers.

Yes and the PATRIOT act is about being patriotic!!

Ohhh gotta defend that RW...don't ever let anyone tell BOX the RW doesn't LOVE vets. ....he'll just deny deny deny or vanish from the thread entirely!

Reality...outside lip service on the campaign trail neither party gives a SINGE FUCKIN' FUCK ABOUT ANY JOE...NOT A SINGLE FUCKIN' ONE.

1 advantage.....(D) supports VA...(R) does everything they can to destroy it.

I charged more for military loans when I was in the Air Force, 50% most of the time. It all depends on what they use the money for.

I didn't suspect you as a usurer but I get fooled,I guess, by your compassion Jimmy.

You sir are a prick, but you knew that.

I'm not defending anybody. However, how many members of the RW spat on veterans returning from Viet Nam?

And, if you are interested, here are some accounts by an actual veteran who returned from Vietnam and endured abuse by leftists. http://www.startribune.com/opinion/commentaries/160444095.html

Actually, he's just attention starved. He makes most of this shit up to get attention and a rise.

Your "by leftists" crack isn't supported by any facts.

However, John Kerry knows a few right-wingers who spat on him because of his Vietnam record.

They were anti-war protesters, which is another way of saying the same thing. Do you have any proof about Kerry? Was it what happened in Vietnam or what happened after he returned to the US?

Yes, there was plenty of spittle launched in Kerry's direction over his service record in Vietnam. Did you sleep through 2004?

I don't believe anybody literally spat on Kerry in 2004, at least not over his service record. It may have happened when he was a veteran returning from the war or even many years afterward, when he was highly critical of his fellow veterans, but not for his service in the war.

Do you have any proof of it?

You conveniently forgot about swiftboating, did you?

Ah, decided to do your "dumb" act because you don't want to see reality. I see.

I see no connection with my point and what you are saying. I said leftists literally spat on American veterans when they returned from Vietnam. That has nothing to do with somebody criticizing the actions of a presidential candidate over thirty years later.

I saw the stories about that in ~1968-9?
Nobody spat on me when I came home in '66. But I had to put up with shit from a lot of people who were pissed at the troops instead of Lyndon and Co.

but this has no bearing on the topic, Box.:(

Maybe not, but I was refuting Post #8, which is strictly bullshit.

Maybe so, he tends to jibber when he's in one of his moods..

But the fact remains that Republicans were blocking the protection of the people and the troops in particular for no rational reason. Can you see corruption when it is in your face Box?

The only reason being against a bad war fought for bad reasons makes you a leftists that's just further proof of the sickness in the R Party.

that being said the predatory loans has long been a problem. To the point that the two first things my Sgt said to me when I got to my first base was don't drink and if you do don't get caught. Then he told me if I had money troubles I should come talk to him before I get myself caught up in that web because once you're in it you're simply not getting out and it's that goddamn simple.

I hope you are aware the US intervention in Vietnam was initiated by JFK and escalated by LBJ, both Dems.
