Oppression - Riot - Oppression - Riot - Baltimore

Benji Hart: Baltimore’s violent protesters are right: Smashing police cars is a legitimate political strategy.

I do not advocate non-violence—particularly in a moment like the one we currently face. In the spirit and words of militant Black and Brown feminist movements from around the globe, I believe it is crucial that we see non-violence as a tactic, not a philosophy.

Non-violence is a type of political performance designed to raise awareness and win over sympathy of those with privilege. When those on the outside of struggle—the white, the wealthy, the straight, the able-bodied, the masculine—have demonstrated repeatedly that they do not care, are not invested, are not going to step in the line of fire to defend the oppressed, this is a futile political strategy. It not only fails to meet the needs of the community, but actually puts oppressed people in further danger of violence.

<snip>

We need to clarify what we mean by terms like “violence” and “peaceful.” Because, to be clear, violence is beating, harassing, tazing, assaulting and shooting Black, trans, immigrant, women, and queer people, and that is the reality many of us are dealing with daily. Telling someone to be peaceful and shaming their militance not only lacks a nuanced and historical political understanding, it is literally a deadly and irresponsible demand.

The political goals of rioters in Baltimore are not unclear—just as they were not unclear when poor, Black people rioted in Ferguson last fall. When the free market, real estate, the elected government, the legal system have all shown you they are not going to protect you—in fact, that they are the sources of the greatest violence you face—then political action becomes about stopping the machine that is trying to kill you, even if only for a moment, getting the boot off your neck, even if it only allows you a second of air. This is exactly what blocking off streets, disrupting white consumerism, and destroying state property are designed to do.

The state is testing how much the rest of the nation will let them get away with.

We've shown them that the killing of un-armed black men isn't an issue for most people, so they will keep on doing it, and they will ramp it up.

Welcome to 1984, knock knock at your front door.

Yes, I believe that's the case.

I do think we need police forces, but they need to be overhauled.

Too much systemic abuse.

The body cameras were a decent idea, but they're already putting in loop holes so that officers in most places can turn them off at their discretion. Guess wen they're going to turn them off "at their discretion"? When they're up to some shady shit.

Baltimore police have a history of killing people in custody... This isn't an isolated event, and you can look at almost any police department in the country and see systemic abuse of power. A major issue is that we're militarizing our police, and treating vast swaths of this country and its citizens as occupied territory and enemy combatants, due process be damned.

Yeah...that's one of the regulations that needs to go into effect.

I think if you decide to be a cop you should also decide that you're going to be under scrutiny, so let's not have loopholes.

Too much power, too many opportunities for corruption. Same as priests.

if only your kind would put the hand down, and go out to find a job instead of seeking the welfare

sadly, obama will reward these thugs

I am a fan of nonviolence, it has been effective.

Violence has also been effective.

I think there has been enough nonviolent protest that it's understandable to resort to other options.

Nonviolence is being effective doesn't seem to work. I'm not an expert on Indian history but honestly the British had had bigger issues than some people in India acting up one way or the other. As for MLK people forget that Malcolm X and the Panthers were working along him. Marching on the capital is hardly "non violence" in any rational sense. Not saying they shouldn't or shouldn't. Every black man in a state that allows arming of people should be sitting out of their capital in my opinion.

Nonviolent protest doesn't mean nonviolent results.

Usually the sympathy comes in for the nonviolent people being hit with bullets or fire hoses.

Women also got the vote in the US from nonviolent protest that was answered with violence.

There is all sorts of nonviolent protest that has worked. Gender rights is going through that right now and the violence is not from LGBT people hitting others, but again being hit with bullets or fire hoses and worse.

The nonviolent side gets more sympathy.

England/Britain doesn't count because that was a long distance relationship at a time that Empire had already crumbled.

Native Americans unfortunately had absolutely nothing to trade that was as valuable as the land they were on (Play Civilization). You have to have something to trade. In this case it's votes and publicity.

"I have no particular love for the idealized 'worker' as he appears in the bourgeois Communist's mind, but when I see an actual flesh-and-blood worker in conflict with his natural enemy, the policeman, I do not have to ask myself which side I am on."

-- George Orwell

I'm not a fan of the police, but in situations like this the cops need to go in guns shooting away.

Malcolm X was right. No one can give you respect, peace, equality or anything. If you're a man, you take those things.

"A man doesn't automatically get my respect. He has to get down on his knees and beg for it."

-- Jack Handey

thug out, retard!

what should have happened, is the national guard should have come in and started to shoot the place up. we need to teach them, that kind of behavior isn't allowed nor will it be tolerated. if you don't like it....LEAVE

Please do. Wait until you see the results of proving you're actually fascists.

When Baltimore declared years ago they would no longer report/deport illegal aliens and was an open city, I vowed never to visit them any more, and haven't.

That said, if people think destroying someone else's business who had nothing to do with anything is the way to get your point across, they have only themselves to blame when there is a lack of jobs or people don't want anything to do with them.

Stereotypes exist for a reason. Keep giving people the excuse to trot them out.
