My brother says that it's illegal to install a Ford engine into a Chrysler car as part of an engine swap.

Is this true?

Neither company would like it.

In the UK it wouldn't be illegal but the insurance premium might rise sharply because the car has been 'modified'.

Some insurers consider 'modification' for as little as sticking 'go faster' stripes on the bodywork, and that might invalidate the insurance if they weren't informed.

(The insurers thinking is that anyone who puts 'Go Faster' stripes on a car is likely to be a worse driver than someone driving a standard vehicle. What they don't say is that applying 'Go Faster' stripes shows you are an idiot and therefore a poor risk.)

It is fine. Even in California which has ridiculous restrictions. You would have to take it to a C.A.R.B certified shop to have them certify the swap.

Why would he think that would be illegal?

I mean, assuming that if you're considering something like that, your warranty is already lonnnggg gone.

Depending on how old the drivetrain is, you may have some electronic management issues.

They spin in opposite directions, so D would be reverse and R would be drive, and turning the steering wheel to the left will cause the car to turn right.

That's death penalty shit right there. Don't do it man, that's it man. Game over, man. Game over!

Even thinking this blasphemy is why your appliances hiss at you in the night.

Maybe he's just an automobile rapist?

There are plenty of Chrysler engines in Fords, so . . . .

...And she is a Chevy fan!

There's no Pentastar there.

The takeover of Sunbeam killed a good car because Chrysler wouldn't allow a Ford engined product:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sunbeam_Tiger

Two major versions of the Tiger were built: the Series I (1964–67) was fitted with the 260 cu in (4.3 L) Ford V8; the Series II, of which only 633 were built in the final year of Tiger production, was fitted with the larger Ford 289 cu in (4.7 L) engine. Two prototype and extensively modified versions of the Series I competed in the 1964 24 Hours of Le Mans, but neither completed the race. Rootes also entered the Tiger in European rallies with some success, and for two years it was the American Hot Rod Association's national record holder over a quarter-mile drag strip.

Production ended in 1967 soon after the Rootes Group was taken over by Chrysler, which did not have a suitable engine to replace the Ford V8.

Don't forget the lug nuts

They would be left threaded on the right and right threaded on the left.:)
