US citizens trying desperately to leave war-torn Yemen fear they have been left to their fate by their own government as fighting escalates between rebel fighters and Washington’s allies.

Saudi-led air strikes against Shia Houthi rebels have prompted urgent warnings about dangers to civilians, and several countries have evacuated their civilians, including China, India, Pakistan and Somalia.

But the US has not followed suit, despite having three navy ships in nearby waters, including the frigate USS Simpson and the destroyer USS Sterett in or near the Gulf of Aden.

State Department about year and a half ago advised US citizens traveling to or staying in Yemen, despite travel warnings not to, should make their own contingency emergency plans, including to enroll their presence in STEP and provide next of kin information. There has been coverage of the Saudi air strikes, but not a lot of mention of people who ignored warnings to leave.

I read the BBC online this am as well as a few other news sources so I was aware but these are not mainstream media for the US. I don't watch TV or read the paper usually.

I don't really know, some of it seems to be on the online version of our local paper. Minnesota is notorious for having a "news for lemmings" view of the world.

If a Minnesotan, relative of a Minnesotan, or former Minnesotan is directly involved or affected, we will hear all about it in graphic detail. Since it is minimal I can only assume the guard troops based in the state are not involved.

Mainly what is in our news today is child/college student disappearances/deaths, clergy sex scandals, Bachman likens Obama to "the deranged" Germanwings copilot, some house fires, additional Federal subs for autistic children, it's 80 degrees!!!! and pretty strange outside-high winds, fire warning, Ca mandatory water restrictions, alps avalanche, mexican oil rig fire, new GMO foods including pink pineapples.
