You are a one to like reading? Here is a book I freakin' LOVE! Somewhere in the middle the guy does something like your Jean-Des-Esseintes - but moves on into a quite higher and more enlightened state. I think it is an awesome book. I read it as a kid in gradeshool and loved it, but just more lately since I have been studying Buddhist Philosophy, and the meanings deepen for me, http://philosophy.lander.edu/oriental/siddhartha.pdf

Yes, another friend recommended Siddhartha to me recently, and I did enjoy it. But I prefer The Glass Bead Game.
As for Eyer - I am far too new to be able to guess who his lost paramour might be, or to remember what he was like before his heart was broken. But he is a fascinating case study in misanthropy.
