When I moved to Tokyo, it was real culture shock. Everything was different, but they were heavily westernized. There were McDonalds but also their own foods. The city was lit up like Las Vegas, there were thousands of people crossing the roads at any one time, and there were strange characters appearing on the TVs all the time. This was the land my grandfather fought against in World War II, but I marveled at how they were just like us and in some cases-better. They were always on the cutting edge of technology, the people were polite, and hard working.

I took this job as a police officer in Tokyo after being discharged from the service and didn't know where to go from there. I heard that there were positions overseas for westerners. The pay was great, and I enjoyed the patrols, but at the same time I was still trying to learn the ropes because I didn't know Japanese all too well, but most of the Japanese knew at least some English. Our station in downtown Tokyo was humming along with activity. Like any station there were the bums, the hardened crooks, and the occasional drunk college student, but what set us apart from most stations was the high amount of Western people there, I wasn't the only guy from America working as an officer.

This day I showed up for my shift, dropped off my bag in my locker, and went into the conference room for our shift supervisor, Duke, to begin his roll-call and briefing. Since I was a few minutes early I grabbed a cup of coffee and sat near the back of the small room opening up my notebook and going through yesterday's notes.

Kaori Matsumoto

Kaori rushed into the station a bit disheveled. It had been a long night the day before and she admittedly had been hung over that morning and thus slept in till her okaa-san woke her up with a rather shrill screech. Something about how her cell phone hadn't stopped going off with alarms, texts, calls.... Tokyo has been her home for years. This is where she was born and raised. Learning English in school and doing everything girls in America did. Stopping for a moment at her desk to apply a quick touch of make up, fix her hair and smooth down her clothes, she popped some aspirin and then went to go to roll call while grabbing her note pad, pen, and the case file.

One by one the other officers filtered in. They were a mixed bag, some westerners, some Japanese. I saw Kaori sitting near the front of the room. When Duke entered everyone was silent as the tall, powerful man, walked to the front of the room. "Morning" he nodded. There was a ripple of response. "Good news; the grave yard shift collared the two liquor thieves that held up the Ichi-ban last week."

There was a sigh of relief. The Ichi-ban was a popular restaurant that we frequented. The officers got reduced rates, some saw it as bribery but we thought it was a way for civilians to say 'thank you'. Duke then held up a colored piece of paper, a profile picture of a young-pretty girl, "This is Aki Ryuu, 18. She was reported missing yesturday by her parents and her friends say she was on a bus heading to Tokyo from Saijo. Keep your eyes open for her. She has no money and no friends in this area." The portrait was handed around to the officers.

"Finally we have the pairing up, Junsa Matsumoto, you'll be pairing up with Junsa Weems" Duke said, "Junsa Lennox?" I raised my hand in the back, "You'll be with O'hara."

"Nani? Saijo?" She murmured to herself. She made a note of the destinations next to the notes on the girl. Kaori couldn't seem to understand why a girl so young would travel so far out here where she knew no one. She'd check all the popular runaway locations. God knows she had been a wild brat herself who had run away from home once or twice growing up. Perking as Duke began to name pairings, she grins a bit and nods. "Hai!" Scarlett O'hara on the other hand, a young fiery red head woman from America, nods her head and stretches her arms out above her.

Duke gave out the patrol areas, Matsumoto and Weems would be taking the Tokyo port area, the loading docks for international shipping, a busy area. Scarlett and I would be taking the Shinjuku area, to the north-west. "Anyone have questions?" Duke asked. No one spoke, just shook their heads, "Be safe out there. Dismissed."

The officers gathered up their papers, stood up, and began heading for the door. Weems was extatic. He wanted to get out to the docks and be free of the streets, be able to patrol the docks and get away from the traffic. He sat behind Matsumoto and when he took up his pad of paper and clip board he clapped a hand onto her shoulder, "You ready to get going?" smiling from ear to ear. Weems was a man full of energy and always eager to prove himself.

When I had gathered up my belongings, I moved to where Scarlett was sitting, calmly putting her gear together. I didn't know her that well, but she had a reputation for being hard, some would say being an 'ice queen'. "Hi, O'Hara" I said with a nervous smile.

Scarlett looked up and arched a brow. "Lennox right? The new guy?" She asks. Getting her gear together before standing up as she looked over their assigned area before tweaking her radio to be on the right channel. "How long have you been in the area?"

Kaori blinked, jumping a bit as Weems put his hand on her shoulder. Looking over her shoulder, she rolls her eyes and pushes his hand off her shoulder. "Baka! Wipe that smile off your face. We've been assigned the docks." She said as she scrunched her nose up in disgust. She hated the docks. Much as she liked seafood, she hated busy areas. "This could take all day and I have somewhere to be tonight." She pouts.

"Oh? Where's that?" Weems asked as they headed out into the halls. Noticeably taller than her, Weems lowered his head to more around Matsumoto's level, "C'mon now, we're suppose to be partners. We have to trust one another on this." As much as Weems was a dedicated officer, he was an outsider and an irritant. However, he was Duke's friend which is how he got posted as an officer in Tokyo. The other officers he had partnered with before didn't like his cocky behavior, now, Duke imposed him onto Matsumoto.

"Over a year" I replied to Scarlett as we headed out behind Weems and Matsumoto. "How about yourself?" Though she was slightly shorter than myself, Scarlett was the kind that had an Ora around her, quiet but cold. Not many knew her too well, Weems did try to get on her good side only for her to nearly break his arm. "I haven't been in our patrol area before."

Scarlett sighed and pulled out a map from her desk. Circling the area in red and the station in black, she hands him the map. Following out behind Kaori, who she felt a little bad for, and Weems, Scarlett would check her gun. "Dont get cocky and don't try to play the hero. Be alert and on the look out."

Kaori groaned and covered her face with her hands. "Never you mind!" She said. Pushing him away from her. Huffing, she folds her arms over her chest as they walked outside. It wasn't anyone's business what she did on her off hours. Especially not Weems, the station's annoyance. He was like the one family remember no one likes to talk about out of embarrassment. "Lets just get down to the docks and get as much of the job done as possible. And remember. Look out for that missing girl....it's a bit unusual for someone so young to travel so far away from home alone. Could be a runaway, which then questions as to why she would come to Tokyo and not to a friend's or relatives..."

"I'll drive!" Weems said as they signed out their vehicle and headed for the garage. Like the annoyance he was, Weems liked to drive fast, but he was a skilled driver. "Don't worry about my handling," he said to his young partner, "I got the best skills of anyone in this department.

We weren't far behind. Scarlett gave me the sheet with the missing girl on it and signed out for the vehicle. The desk sergeant gave me a look off, "You're going to to get it" when we headed down to the vehicle. I wasn't going to show off. I had nothing to prove in this case, just trying to stay alive for tomorrow. With our weapons and our vehicle we went to our cruiser as Scarlett started it up.

Scarlett got in the driver's seat and started it up before she buckled herself in. Waiting for her partner to be buckled in, she backed out and smoothly drove off to the main road so they could get to their destination which was about forty minutes away. "So why did you come to Tokyo?"[/XOLOR] Scarlett asks. Tuning the radio.

"Eh!?" Kaori blinked at Weems and snatched the keys from him. "No way! I'm driving!" She said as she darted off to the cruiser with the keys down her shirt. As annoying as her partner was, she could tell he didn't seem like the type to reach into a girls shirt. Grinning victoriously, she unlocked the car and got in. Starting it up and revving the engine, she bit her bottom lip and quickly shook her head. She'd get her fix tonight. Buckling up, she waits for Weems to be ready before using her drifting skills to back then out and strive them around before driving off to the main road. The docks was about an hour away.

I got in the cruiser and buckled in before Scarlett moved out. "I joined up after I was discharged from the service," I said to answer her question, "I applied to many of the local departments and to be a firefighter, then, my buddy Duke called me up and asked for me to come to Japan saying that it would be better than working in the big cities, like LA." In many ways, he was right, but this city was bigger than most that I've been in. As we left the station and moved towards our patrol route, I looked at our surroundings. It was a beautiful, bright and clear day with only a few clouds in the sky and traffic was relatively light. "What about you?" I asked, "Why'd you come here?"

"Girl, that is just unfair" Weems sighed after watching his partner drop the keys down her blouse. He stowed his gear in the trunk and saddled up in the front seat as they headed out. Heading in a different direction as us, Weems still was eager to reach the docks and begin their patrol, "Hope you got some skills to get us there fast" he said.

Kaori looked at him from the corner of her eyes and grinned. "Careful what you ask for." She said as she shifted gears and pushed on the gas. Speeding them up with a giggle. "Still wanna ask where I have to be tonight?!" She asks. Turning on the radio to play some music to match the moment.

"Needed a new start." Was her only answer as she glanced towards the clock on the dashboard while putting on the radio for some music. It would be interesting to see if Weems made it back to the station in one piece. Oh she hoped Kaori popped him one. It was always fun making Duke pay up on these ridiculous but fun bets against Weems.

Weems continued to hold on with right hand against the door frame as their cruiser squealed through the streets. Fortunately there was no one in their way as they covered the rest of the distance to the docks. "You're crazy" Weems said, but his words were probably drowned out by the music she was blaring.

Ahead of them, the docks were humming with activity. Several cargo ships have arrived from overseas carrying all sorts of treasures, beef from America, electronic parts from Mexico, fish from the seas of the Orient, and more, but with each ship there had to be an inspection and the conex boxes that were being offloaded were a tempting target for thieves.

To Scarlett's answer I didn't bother to go any further. We went down the streets to our patrol area and found that the streets were slowly becoming choked with more and more pedestrians. "Great" I sighed watching them. Hundreds of people all crossing at once. A good truck could drive through here and kill hundreds in one go.

Scarlett didn't complain and merely honked her horn a few times as she moved right along with the flow of traffic and pedestrians. "You get use to it." She tells him. Keeping her focus to the road and the amount of people crossing.

Kaori pulled the car to a stop. Laughing, she would turn the car off and get out. Adrenaline rushing through her and making her giddy. "Yosh! That....was so much fun!!" She laughed. Fixing her hair as she gave him the keys to keep pocketed till they had finished up here.

Being handed the keys, Weems pocketed them as he stepped out of the cruiser and donned his hat and carefully looked about his surroundings. conex trailers were stacked several high all around them all with contents from the far off lands. There was no one around, rather strange. He placed his right hand on his service pistol to ensure that it was there and wiped his hand along his belt to ensure that all of his other gear was in place. "Quiet" he said, "I like quiet."

When Scarlett and I had reached our patrol area my eyes began searching the area carefully. Mostly there were pedestrians going about their duties, but as officers we were trained to look beyond that. I looked in the back alleys where most of the criminals would hide and on the roof tops because that's where most of the dangers came from in my service. My service pistol was at my side and we had a pump action 12 gauge shotgun mounted behind us. Japan's laws had it so only the Self Defense Force and the police had firearms, so we were going heavy, but we still knew to never doubt an enemy. They could be packing heat.
