I was never particularly a Marylin Manson fan. I just looked up "Beautiful People" for Lance's thread and have just been letting it roll.

His version of Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus' and Soft Cell's 'Tainted Love" were really quite good. Now I am listening to his cover of The Eurythmic's "Sweet Dreams."

Maybe he should be a cover artist.

Maybe it is a getting old thing that I like covers.

A.A.F's cover of "Smooth Criminal" was better than the original and the original was pretty slick production.

"Careless Whispers" was on the radio during a period of youthful angst, and it was dead-perfect to have Seether's version on the radio a while back.

Manson does a great version of "You're so vain" as well.

Cover songs are great when they're done in a different genre than the original.

This is one of my favorite covers. Velvet Revolver doing The Talking heads Psycho Killer.

That's a good listen.

I think you are right about the need for it to be a re-imagined version. Otherwise it sounds like, "What was wrong with the original?"

I loved Johnny Cash's cover of NIN's "Hurt."

Some great covers. When I first thought of this thread it was going to be about "What artist or band do you like more than you think you do?" Certain acts would never make my "favorite" list if I was writing one down but I always enjoy when I bump into them.

When three of Manson's were covers, I realized that was actually what I was enjoying. Familiar music, presented in a new way.

The tool one is a good example. Not a tool fan but it is really good.

I always associated "Turn the Page" with Segar.

Knocking on Heaven's door is one of those songs covered so often I couldn't tell you who was the original. Dylan, I think, but for all I know he was covering.

"Almost Heaven" worked only OK because they mostly changed the tempo...I am glad I gave it a listen to the end where they rocked it. I am not overly impressed with people that can play fast, loud or rough. I figured Eddie Van Halen is fast enough. But I do appreciate anyone that can make a guitar sing like that.

The Grand Funk one was too close to the original. I liked the original better. It needs to be straight Mo-Town, or something entirely different.

The Allman Bros. Version of "Trouble no more" has always been a favorite, but I have a fetish for electric blues. Most of that stuff is covers.

Marilyn Manson's "Tainted Love" is gritty and I like it better than the original by Soft Cell.
