the one that took up residence in the burn pile had a litter of kits. the mexican speaking great pyrenees and his chihuahua henchman keep wandering over nocturnally to investigate. so far the rabbit family has eluded them. it is life on the prairie.

tracks in the snow, telling a story.

We have one of those. My kids keep putting out food for the wee thing and are intent on capturing it.

My great hunters.

they are not my charge. usually, they wait til spring and birth in a concealed hollowed out spot in the back yard, covered with clipped grass and fur. then i suck them up with the tractor mower.

not s story i generally share with msN.

My outdoor cats are good hunters, so nothing ever nests close, except for a squirrel that likes to taunt them.

I have no idea what's happening on my property beyond the driveway and two, main, entrances. Eight plus feet of snow deters investigation.

the dog, the one that is forever resting in the soil under the silver maple, would spend hours on point and then chasing the summer rabbit around the barn and machine shed, until blowing out his acls.

the rabbit always won.

Paws size of tea saucers. Claws that would not shame a bear.
Tracks jumping down from the tree, across the snow, and up another tree.
(I will not wade into snow, to look at the tree.)

Snow falling off of the branches, muddy the matter.
The snow is too deep, to scrape for ground level herbage.

Someone suggested that the Fisher cat is hunting.
What is there is deer hoofs, and squirrel paws.

the winter rabbit tracks have been replaced by pink size 1 boot prints.
and a few snow angels.

awwww *melted heart* "Those little hands, and tiny fingers."

Bunny pellets all around the grouped wild roses.

Bunnies eat rose hips ?

The mice and chipmunks counted themselves among the fortunate. New stone wall with no mortar. Plentiful bird seed and sunflower seeds.

That was before the coyote came to visit. The paw prints did not sink very deep into the snow. The coyote dove where the tall forsythia's tips were waving. It left a hole where its chest pushed the powder down. Deep holes, where the legs sank in.

The creatures were not safe under the high snowdrift.

Today, the snowbanks kept their cold and the snow was still powder. Last night's snow was feathery and dry, this morning. This will not remain an easy time for the coyote. The rain and slush will soak the snow. Heavy wet cement-like snow will harden, and the crust will become inches of hard ice.

I looked out at the snow with naked eyes. Overcast for months, now the sun glares.
My winter rabbit left tracks. The turkeys have stopped sinking and struggling.
I do not know if the winter robin survived.

It shouldna took that left turn at Albuquerque...
