More Government Loving Republicans at work.

Washington, D.C. -- Two powerful House Republicans late Tuesday warned D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser not to move forward with legalizing marijuana in the nation’s capital and they warned of stiff federal retribution if the city’s chief executive did not yield.

The letter came on the same day that Bowser declared that a voter-approved measure to legalize pot would become law in the city at 12:01 a.m. on Thursday and the letter set the stage for a dramatic final 24 hours before that deadline.

“If you decide to move forward tomorrow with the legalization of marijuana in the District, you will be doing so in knowing and willful violation of the law,” read the letter signed by U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-Utah), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), chair of the appropriations subcommittee that handles the D.C. budget.

In an interview with The Washington Post, Chaffetz went further. He said that if Bowser and city officials are “under any illusion that this would be legal, they are wrong. And there are very severe consequences for violating this provision. You can go to prison for this. We’re not playing a little game here.”

Chaffetz and Meadows should mind their own business. It's a local issue and was approved by the voters.

It is their business, dear. DC aint no state, its a federal reserve, and pot is illegal shit under federal law. Congress has a police force in DC, and Congress can put yo black mother raping ass in jail in DC.

Being approved by the voters does not always mean anything. There have been many propositions passed by the voters in CA but overturned by the courts for one reason or other.

Personally, I think MJ for recreational use should be legal everywhere, but it is against federal law, which applies more strongly in DC than anywhere else.

GOOD, hopefully it finally forces you bunch of cunts to FINALLY address the issue.

I was hoping Obama would man up and make it legal...which he can do.

25% of the property in DC is Federal. The rest is city or privately owned.

DC even has its own police force! Can you believe it?!

Another pot thread with "conservatives" cheering federal supremacy over the will of the people...LMFAO it never gets old.

God damn I beat vettey up so bad in these things he won't even come into one anymore LMFAO!!!

The law says you can grow your own in the privacy of your own house. You can't sell it and you can't smoke it outside.

A man's home is his castle; except when the big government types have their big noses inside the drawbridge.

I'm not a Liberal; I'm more of a Libertarian. Whenever the legalization of MJ has appeared on the ballot in CA, I have voted for it because I believe it is nobody's business what I smoke or drink or snort.

A few years ago, there were ballot propositions in CA about same sex marriage. Believing two adults should be able to form a contract, I voted in favor of SSM but the majority of the voters voted against it. Then the courts abrogated the will of the majority. Did you complain about that decision?

How can Obama pass laws single-handedly? He can issue pardons to anybody arrested, but he can't pass laws or repeal laws that are on the books.

Although at this point the Bill has effectively become an Act, its journey to becoming a law that must be obeyed by the populace is not yet complete. Unique to the District of Columbia, an approved Act of the Council must be sent to the United States House of Representatives and the United States Senate for a period of 30 days before becoming effective as law (or 60 days for certain criminal legislation). During this 30-day period of congressional review, the Congress may enact into law a joint resolution disapproving the Council’s Act. If, during the 30-day period, the President of the United States approves the joint resolution, the Council’s Act is prevented from becoming law. If, however, upon the expiration of the 30-day congressional review period, no joint resolution disapproving the Council’s Act has been approved by the President, the Bill finally becomes a Law and is assigned a law number.
As far as I know the US congress failed to enact in to law a resolution disapproving of the DC law, so the bill becomes law at 12:01AM tonight.

Actually he pretty much can in practice. He can't pass laws, but if he wants officers arresting you for 'x' they are gonna find your busted tail light every single fucking time and he can advise law enforcement to basically ignore anything he wants them to ignore and it's totally his perogative.

That also applies to a DC voter initiative, yes?

This is what Slate has to say about it:

http://www.slate.com/blogs/the_slat...egon_alaska_and_d_c_pass_ballot_measures.html

In D.C.—a city in which black residents are eight times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession than white ones, according to an American Civil Liberties Union analysis—Initiative 71 passed by a wide margin, as polls predicted it would. Like all D.C. laws, the ballot measure is subject to congressional review. While Initiative 71 is more restrictive than other legalization efforts around the country, members of the D.C. Council are working on legislation that would legalize and establish a regulatory regime for pot retail in the District. Earlier this year, House Republicans attempted—and failed, thanks to the then-Democratic-controlled Senate—to gut a D.C. law decriminalizing marijuana possession.

Not that the prospect of a fight with a fully Republican-controlled Congress harshed the celebrations of D.C. marijuana activists, whose victory party in a local bar was filled to capacity Tuesday evening. In what was perhaps a sign of marijuana’s political maturation, though, sparking up was discouraged. “We told everyone if you’re going to celebrate with cannabis, do it at home,” Initiative 71 ringleader Adam Eidinger told Washingtonian magazine. “When I get home, I’m going to smoke a joint.”

I don't have a lot of faith in the veracity of the site, but this is a matter of fact, rather than an opinion.

Yeah, that damned pesky United States Constitution is SUCH a nuisance! Just ask Vetty!

This is why, more often than not, "republican" does no equal "conservative." Unless by conservative, they mean conserving oppression based on a pre-prohibition era mindset that everyone acknowledges was a disaster.

 Any Republican who doesn't do that is a RINO because they aren't conservative ENOUGH.

Lot of Republican money in Law Enforcement/Corrections industries...LOT of Republican monetary interest.

Also cotton/corn/logging industries? Paid a fortune to use cannabis the drug to make hemp the fiber/oil illegal in order to corner their markets and continue to do so to this very day. Those are all largely RW friendly industries...

BUTT!!! Monsanto, a RW homie, is starting to stick it's neck out some....starting to get some RW backing. The money is undeniably good...even with large shares of the market still black the legal market is making a killing. They know the money is there now and it's getting some legit attention. This causes great conflict withing the GOP and to a lesser extent even the DNC...because so much vested in fighting weed for the past 40 years.

I won't say the fight is over, but man...the h8terz are getting their ass's kicked pretty bad over the past few years. :D Sad part is they need it more than anyone....seriously....... think about it.
