I think some Northern types should offer up some driving tips.

Here, in this thread, would be as good a place as any.

Southerners could ask questions here, too. Although, your best advice might be to stay home.

By law, we need to have snow tires. I have great tires that are studded, very rarely do I slide.

This is a bit late for all you Southerners. So, I would say stay home and keep safe.

Keep a shovel where you can get to it easily.

Buy milk, bread, beer and whatever else you can get your hands on. Northern folks go into a frenzy over these items.

The hubs used to do the OTR thing. Plow/salt trucks are rare in the South.

Silver, I'd second the milk/bread/beer run. Necessities being what they are...

If you get stuck do not try and floor the pedal to get out, that will only spin the tires and get you stuck more. Try going slowly with even pressure on the pedal.

Practice stopping somewhere safe and before you need to, so you know your stopping distance and road conditions.

things to keep in car

water, matches, space blanket, extra wool socks and sweaters, food, shovel.

cell phone charger.

We turn the heat up a few degrees and walk around the house naked all day. Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.

Having driven a million pounds in the snow professionally for 17,000 hours with no accidents my biggest pieces of advice are: plan ahead, and the brakes not only are not your friend, don't even bother with them.

Whenever you think about hitting them, hit the gas instead. Really.

The bread, milk, and egg frenzy cracks me up!

Dear Southerners, stay home. :)

Yes! Every year, for every storm, they show all the shelves sold out of these items on the news.
We kind of laugh. :D
But it is good to have on hand, Especially, if there is a chance of an ice storm.

People down south are fucking nuts about this stuff. Don't they keep any spare food, etc. in the house?

Same with the northern people? Don't they have shovels or salt? It is the same thing every year.

Additional tip: when stuck, turn off your traction control (if your car is equipped).

Nope. But, don't let me stop you.

I can pee in the snow bank.

Sometimes it's difficult to get to the snow bank from the middle of I-85's eight lane parking lot but I'm sure your gravel roads are easier to negotiate. Plus a packet of Splenda turns it into a poor man's Mountain Dew.
