ISIS Burns 8000 Rare Books and Manuscripts in Mosul

While the world was watching the Academy Awards ceremony, the people of Mosul were watching a different show. They were horrified to see ISIS members burn the Mosul public library. Among the many thousands of books it housed, more than 8,000 rare old books and manuscripts were burned.

But, but, but the conquistadors burned Incan libraries.

Note the purple font for sarcasm.

That is just sad.

Iraq, the cradle of civilization, the birthplace of agriculture and writing and the home of the Sumerian, Akkadian, Assyrian, Babylonian and Arab civilizations had never witnessed such an assault on its rich cultural heritage since the Mongol era in the Middle Ages.

Fucking disgusting!!!

I am not surprised. ISIS like the Taliban doesn't care about anything outside of their specific interests which I am pretty sure is eventually world domination.

Is that something peculiar to Islam? My recollection is that the destruction of the Library of Alexandria happened when the Muslims conquered Egypt.

No, book burning seems to be a common theme among fundies of all varieties...

I guess they didn't catch the librarians or they would have burned them with the books!:(

Are these folks Southern Baptists?

Not even close to being as bad...these people are fucking their own shit, totally separate and not our shit, up on the other side of the planet.

LOL @ MOSUL!! Well they got their Islamic government they were just dying to have.

Now I'm getting confused....is it ISIS or ISIL?
Some news reports say one, some the other.

That was the last recorded burning of that Library.

The first three:
-Julius Caesar, though allegedly that was a result of collateral damage from Roman forces fighting Ptolemaic forces for control of the city.
-Roman Emperor Aurelian, though again it was allegedly a result of collateral damage in suppressing the revolt of Queen Zenobia of Palmyra
-By decree of Emperor Theodosius in an attempt to suppress paganism (which at the time was focusing on rational naturalism (i.e. science)).

Anyone when the Taliban destroyed the statues of the Buddha which had been carved into an Afghanistan cliff side back in the late 90's?

In related news Mein Kampf set to return to the shelves of German bookstores...

150 Christians kidnapped, probably to be burned, but please,

Keep the focus on past Christian atrocity.

Atheist AJ defending Christians....because they are such a great wedge issue to bash Obama on!

Right, because nobody else ever burned books or libraries..

The Library at Antioch by the Christian Emperor Jovian
The House of Wisdom Library in Baghdad by Mongol hordes
Lollard's Books by edict of King Henry IV
Jewish and Arab books in Andalucia by the Spanish Inquisition
Martin Luther's German translation of the Bible was burned in catholic parts of Germany by order of the Pope
The Original Library of Congress Collection was burned by British troops,
Library of St. Augustine Academy Philadelphia burned by Anti-Irish protestors

just to name a few.

So no, burning libraries isn't peculiar to Islam.

Worse than burning books, these assholes are burning people. They're making Saddam Hussein look good by comparison. I wonder if W had it to do over again, knowing what he knows now, if he would have left Saddam alone. I would certainly hope so.
