Every time I have my BP took I think my arm will explode very dramatically like the bloke's head in Scanners.

I, too, occasionally have that sensation when my BP is taken at the doctor's office. I think a little bit of the reflexive "fight or flight" response kicks in.

I take my blood pressure every day. My physician recommended that I buy a home blood pressure machine (they're pretty inexpensive) and record the readings. I've been surprised by the variability of mine. It rises when I'm cold. It rises over the course of the day. It rises for no appreciable reason.

There's a well-known phenomena called "white coat fever" where people's blood pressure is inflated by the presence of medical personnel or a hospital setting. My systolic reading is almost always at least 10 points higher at my physician's office than it is at home.

It's also informative to see how my blood pressure (and pulse) responds to vigo(u)rous exercise. On the day following a long run or bicycle ride or tennis match, both my blood pressure and my pulse are usually quite subdued. After long periods of exercise, my BP will run in the 115/65 range with a resting heart rate of 48-50.
